is there a workaround to change the machine name e.g. "to be filled by O.E.M." to a name i like!?

Not sure what you mean, are you talking about the machine network name or the user account?

I'm betting you bypassed the initial setup after installing. This is the only reason I can think of that would cause 'to be filled by oem' to be put there.
