Would you recommend updating to the voodoo kernel first?

just so i can confirm I'm about to do the right steps:

I simply download the updates right from the apple website
Then I extract the .pkg files out of the .dmg files I get from the website
I then place the .pkg file in the download folder
Then I run AMD Software Updater normally without selecting any specific options?
reboot and hope for the best?
