I couldn't get it to post properly.

As to booting with -v: I can't get to any screen that lets me enter these letters. (But there's a screen where you can boot with safe mode, or verbose mode anyway.)

The computer has been set to AHCI since I bought it.

I'll come back and try those other two methods you suggested.
