The New iPhone OS 3.0

It's finally announced and official. The update is coming out on June 17th.
Sneak peak of the new software, and the new model of iPhone is on the web. It looks like it's not going to change much on the inside, and almost nothing changed on the outside.

And here is the comparison of 3GS and 3G models :

Comparison

Seems like the only difference is :

2 hours more talk time on 2G network.
Improved Performance ( new processor ? it is told as well that it has 256Mb RAM )
3Mp Camera with Autofocus and Video Recording
Digital Compass
Voice-controll

Well, as for me - only the "Improved Performance" seems like a "do want" feature. So i guess i wont change mine until next generation.

There's nothing that would stop them adding voice control to the 3G, hell the Google app does it. I'm pretty sure that's an artifical software limit to help sell devices. Hopefully the QuickPwn team can unlock some of these 3GS only applications.

I noticed the specs page says it now has a new fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating - i think that was an unannounced feature.

I think 'meh' sums it up nicely :-/

On a whole I was completely underwhelmed with the new iPhone and keynote. I personally feel that the new 3GS doesn't really provide current 3G owners with much of an upgrade incentive. Certainly there are some advantages with better battery life and slightly faster hardware, but surely certain features such as video could have been provided within iPhone OS 3.0 rather than making it a 3GS only feature? You've only got to look at Cyrecorder (a jailbreak app) to realise that this is already possible on current generation iPhones (albeit a bit choppy at times). Voice recognition has also been accomplished by Google for their search app. I do understand that companies have a business model and need to achieve certain goals particularly when it comes to making money, but I sometimes do wonder if Apple is taking us all for idiots.

I just posted this earlier in another thread:

Wow Apple's milking the cash cow, bastards.

I don't see any major update, most of the hype is a new camera and slightly faster chip. 90% of the new features are FIRMWARE. I will keep my original iPhone as long as it lasts because this is just stupid. Do they want us to get new phones every 6 months? Screw that.

I have to disagree -- I like the new iPhone 3GS a lot. It might look the same on the outside, but would you really prefer a matte back cover, for instance? I wouldn't. In my opinion, the design of the 3G is gorgeous and doesn't need to be changed. However, I hope Apple fixed the plastic cracking issue!

What do you wanted Apple to introduce? The update is exactly what I was personally waiting for. Now we have a 3MP cam with autofocus and video recording. The iPhone has a faster CPU, more RAM and longer battery life. Amazing! Same design as the 3G and significantly faster speed - I'm ready to upgrade from my classic 2G.

I didn't like the 3G because its wobbly on flat surfaces and that the plastic back broke frequently (from what I read). Never had that problem with aluminum. Each to his own I guess. :D

Hi MoC,

Indeed, I also love the aluminium back of the iPhone 2G - the 3G's plastic is certainly cheaper. However, I personally prefer the rounded design of the 3G because it feels better in my hands. The plastic also provides better grip. Don't get me wrong, I personally like all the iPhones Apple released, yet.

The new SDK now has two versions. One for Leopard and one for Snow Leopard.

Some info on the new SDK:
-Requires OS X 10.5.7 or Snow Leopad Final Developer Preview (Build 10A380)
-You can now use the iPhone SDK 3.0 for submitting for iPhone 2.2.1 applications

File Sizes:
-iPhone / iPhone 3G / iPod Touch G1 : ~230MB
-iPod Touch 2G : 258MB
-SDK for Leopard : 2.1GB
-SDK for Snow Leopard (get this) : 404MB !?!

Just went through the release and not much has changed feature wise from beta 5. I'm not telling! Not sure when beta 5 is going to expire but I upgraded all the devices just in case.

Well 3.0 is OUT.
Nice stuff. :D Of course Youtube wouldn't connect earlier but I just resynced and that fixed it. Seems there's a graphic bug or two though. :\

Yeah, i've updated already - no problems with activation this time. Works nice - im surprised with the quality of voice memos, its really good. Also it works very smooth, and at last we have copy&paste and landscape messaging :) Did't find any major bugs - at least yet.
