Problem with my Gateway gm5664
I've followed the instruction on the first post. It seems like my problem is with the SATA drive on my machine which was recognized as a read only device. So can not partition or format the drive at all. I have the nvdia geforce6150se/nforce 430 graphic. Here is the spec http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1015004R/1015004Rsp2.shtml Where can I find a driver for this chip set? Any help is greatly appreciated. |
Hello,
I'm doing everything as I should, but when I get to "5. Update kernel to latest (using Kalyway all kernels package)" I'm not sure which one to install. The sleep one boots, but my USBs started acting weird. I tried to fix them somehow and I screwed everything - even if I replace the kernel and system.kext with the backup I made them, I'm still unable to boot. Even in safe mode. So now I'm going to format the disk again and install everything again. So my question is which kernel are you guys using and do you have any problems with the USBs? I have the same mobo and cpu as Shadow3k and this thread helped me enormously. Just wanna make everything work perfectly. |
@Seawane
if you use the chameleon bootloader you can then use the latest 9.3.0 modbin efi kernel which youll find on leo4all forums L8rs LawlessPPC |
Lawless, I have the very same MB model as you do! I can't boot OS X Install with the regular Zephyroth 10.5.2 disk ("Still waiting for root device"-error), but when I manually edited the install disk with the SB600 kexts, the dvd managed to boot all the way into the installer! Only problem now is, that I can't see my Samsung SATA-II disk at all, even with the SB600 kexts.. All I see in Disk Utility is my two cd/dvd-drives. Also, when I try to mount my HDD manually in the Installer Command Prompt it says that I can't do that because it doesn't recognise the filesystem. :S Is there any specific command I need to execute for the install to see my HDD? Do you have any solution to the problem?
See my config below: CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 4800+ @ 2.5GHz MB: MSI K9A2 CF-F RAM: 4Gb Corsair (DDR2 667) @ 800MHz North Bridge: ATi/AMD 780 South Bridge: ATi SB600 DVD Drive: LiteOn DVDRW SHM-165P6S (IDE) HDD: Samsung Spinpoint T166 320GB (SATA-II) |
I used the 10.5.1 disk on my install but have now managed to run 10.5.2 and that has no issues with my drives when it boots admitted I have changed the dvd but nothing to do with the SATA chipset. As a small note try booting with the options -v -f this is always worth a try if you are having trouble suprising how many pickels this has got me out of also try just running with 2GB of memory at least for the install. Also if you can pick up a usb to SATA/IDE adapter this can be a god send. This will let you make the install to the disk you want then let you install the sb600 kext with kext helper then boot drive on a SATA lead but use -v -f switches. These adapters arent expensive and help you get out of all tricky situations. When I added the sb600.kext to 10.5.1 dvd it wasnt the best way but heres how I did it. I just copied SB600.kext to system/library/extensions then when I booted dvd I just used the -v -f switches this will only give you sata support for that session which means it wont be installed when you have finished. So untill an iso appears that will let you boot and have sata support from the word go your only option is a usb to sata adapter. It will let you do a normal install then install the needed SB600 kext then move drive to a SATA connector.
Hope this helps L8rs LawlessPPC |
Well, but if the SB600 kext doesn't have SATA-II support? Will it work inside OSX anyway?
Anyhow, thanks for your reply m8! |
sb600.kext gives sata support. but if you only add it to the dvd by just putting it in extensions folder and forcing it to load by the -f switch at darwin screen. This does not mean it will be installed on your hardrive. You will need an installer to do this which is either included in the dvd as zephyroth 10.5.2 rev2 does or you install via usb then install the sb600 kext and then move the drive.
Hope this clears things up LawlessPPC |
Ok, but after trying -f method I still can't see my HDD in Disk Utility.. Will probably have to install via USB HD/USB->SATA adapter.
Thanks for your help m8! It's been really helpfull! |
hmmm sorry Im not of any use something doesnt add up. Try and grab the zephy 10.5.2 rev2 that will definately handle the SATA I have tried it on this board.

@ Simba: Is this a wallpaper of you? ;-)
|
Lawless:
Well, that's the DVD I'm currently using; the 10.5.2 Rev.2. Yeah, I've also figured out that something is a little weird... But I managed to solve my problem: I reconnected my old IDE Seagate 120GB HDD and installed OS X on it, speeds when installing are incredible! :-) Almost the speed you would get when installing on a real mac ^^ Everything now installs right and so, but now I have a new problem: After install, on initial boot, after the apple logo has gone away and the "OS config manager" is supposed to come up (where you put in username etc.) my screen gets all messed up! I see broad stripes, in colors shifting from black, red, white and blue. When I move my mouse I sometimes see a little white stripe moving on the screen.. Is this a well known problem? I've tried both of the two drivers for my card in the install with no success, I've also tried using none of them, and both together, but no luck. Perhaps I should try using only 2GB of RAM instead of 4GB? My GFX card is a Powercolor HD3870 btw. For your information Lawless, without your help I most surely would still have been stuck with my SATA-2 drive! Most appreciated! :-) ----------------------Offtopic-------------------- naquaada: Hahaha, well I have a friend at school, who use to call me Simba (Real name is Simon) ^^ After a little thinking, I thought that "hey, it's quite fun!" And I now use it about all of the time :P |
Yes, I also use it. It's something different to the mostly abstract Apple-style wallpapers.
|
@Simba did you manage to do an install without the Graphics drivers and boot up to a desktop. If not then try this then try the latest drivers for HD3870. But if you put 10.5.3 update on theres a way you need to install them or you will get blank menus. Look up white menu fix 10.5.3 that will give the details
L8rs LawlessPPC |
or try boot with the -x switch at the darwin boot screen this should run in safe mode and not lauch graphics card driver. Should let you re-install it.
|
Oh, ok thanks lawless! :) I'll try that and post my results later on :P

I am running Zephy 10.5.1 on a Asus m3a32-mvp deluxe. My Phenom is the 9750 (2.4 GHz), 4 GB DDR2 +1066 (Corsair Dominator), and 2 SATA-HDD both Samsung 750GB. My GK is a HIS HD3870 (512 GDDR4).
Using Kext Helper is very easy to install the SB600 kext, it does work, then after a reboot it works instead of genericPCATA and SATA. I have issues trying to update zephy. How? From where can I get the update packages? The other important point is, how can I install the HD3870?? Are there any kexts out there for the network card? In the user's manual for the mobo it just says "Marvell PCIe Gigabit LAN". And what about the AMD 790FX?? Do you know of any working kext for it?? Thanks a lot!!! |
for your graphics card there is an irc channel with them in you will find that on insanely mac just search for it. The ASU from sephy which you will find in this forum is the safest way to do the updates. But if you go to the leo4all forum which you will find on the homepage for infinitemac. There is lots of info in there on the best way to use the ASU by Zephy.

Hi. I've managed to finally get into the installer using Zeph's 10.5.1 install disc, but when I go to format the partition for OSx86, it just lists my Vista partition as 128GB and doesn't show anything after the initial 128GB. I was planning on installing Leopard on a 50GB partition at the end of the drive. If I must install OSx86 on the main drive, then I'll do some partition re-organizing on the drive, but I'd prefer to leave it as it is. If this is a problem with BIOS or a problem with Leopard I'd love to know. I'm pretty sure that it shouldn't be a problem the LBA, seeing as this is a MUCH newer mobo and should work with drives larger than 128, but you never know, MSI might just like to mess around with people since Windows has a software solution available.
System Specs: cpu: AMD Phenom 9850 BE mobo: MSI K9A2 Platinum 790FX ram: Corsair Dominator 2x2gb ddr2 pc2-8500 gfx: 2x ATI Radeon HD 4850 (Crossfired) HDDs: 3x Seagate 250GB SATAI / 1x Western Digital 250GB SATAII RAID 0 1x Seagate 250GB PATA Optical: Sony DVD RW DRU-530A |
@ikari7789
try the latest phenom image see if that detects it differently |
What is the latest phenom image?
How would that solve a HD problem? |
Oops, forgot to mention that the 128 GB is part of the 250 GB PATA and that I have a 50GB partition at the end of the PATA drive (the rest is for Vista). My RAID is for my Vista storage so that I can go around and mess with things like this and not have to worry about losing much data. :)
|
@ikari different drivers to 10.5.1
|
Where can I get them? I haven't ever installed OSx86 on an AMD machine, only used my cruddy Intel box that I no longer use anymore. It had perfect compatibility though and I never had any trouble installing on it so I never learned about sources and places to find drivers. Sorry to be such a bother. Thank you already for your help.
