Thanks guys! I'll give you a full list of the options I used in a few hours time when I get home. But for now :-
1. Which would be best to do? Install the disabler kext or the voodoo kernel (or both?)
2. How do I do this (or do you have a link to instructions?)
Sorry if I seem like a complete tard but I've been tainted by micro(EVIL)soft, and the only other os I've really used are commodores! Lol

all this is because you are running more than 3.5gb of memory. You need to use a 64bit aware kext or driver for your sata/ide.

Yeah, after I posted I came across the Slashack postings and so on. I grabbed the VIAATA kext from the posts and I'll install later 2day and see what happens.

The M2A-VM HDMI system runs excellent but no Hardware Video and the freezings for the package extraction. Which makes me remember, I never tried with less than 4GB RAM.

Here goes...

I'll post later.

Edit: Ok cool! I left in only 2GB and the Package patcher worked to the end.
Made an image of the drive so I can restore.

Now to UPDATE!
"Crosses Fingers"

Thankx Lawless

Right, I've got the list of options i used in the installation

Third Party Drivers :
Sound Driver : ALC883 6 Port (I saw it mentioned somewhere on here this is the one i need)
Chipset Driver : VIA and SB chipset driver
Graphics Driver : Nvidia Drivers (Wasn't sure if there was a particular one i should use)
Network Driver : LAN drivers (again I wasn't sure which to use)
File Systems : NTFS

Hope this can give you an idea of whats up!
Cheers

i use both voodoo and the disabler just to be safe but putting the kernel on is easier then adding the extension without a gui. So copy the kernel to the root of the drive and call it backup then boot press f8 as its booting at the darwin prompt and type backup -v -f

then once in the os you can use kexthelper to install the disabler kext and make a copy of backup and then call it mach_kernel to replace the old kernel. Then repair permissions for the drive.

your system specs are to generic look at the way mine are posted it gives you all the info you need to know about my hardware. It just makes life easier and saves ppl the trouble of having to read up on your motherboard for which chips it runs. The secret to a good install is to just install the chipet driver. The reason being you are unlikely to have conflicts with a bad driver on boot. Then you can install the other drivers after and if it doesnt boot you know exactly which driver caused an issue. The reason i say this is this release is quite old now and its suprising what support apple add in l8r versions. You may not need to install seperate drivers for everything in an up to date install. Also your filesystem wont be NTFS as OSX wont right to it without the help of a utility.

ok, it's installed and onto the section where you select keyboard layout, then if you want to transfer files from another mac. I select the "do not transfer my information now" option and click continue but it just goes back to the beginning :s
I've got the voodoo kernel (it's a dmg file) how do I use this? I know it's an apple image, but how do I access it to get the kernel? And how do I copy the kernel to the drive with mac is on? Sorry bout this, just I have little knowledge of macs so far and can't figure it out!

Ok, managed to get it going! :D only problem is I don't have network access. My board has a atheros PCIe gigabit lab builtin. How do I add the driver for it? And is there one available that will work for it?

Closer to Joy

Still running my Lawless installed, it's the only distro that boots and installs on my M2A-VM HDMI. Seems installing the AppleVIAATA.kext from the Slashack post cured the freezes with the 8GB RAM, But I can't see my PATA Drives (1 HD,
1 Pioneer DVR116). Not too big an issue, an enclosure via USB2.0 works well, and I don't have my NTFS Drives read/write - my Vista partition was trashed once.

Also after patching the 10.5.6 Combo update package, "USB kexts fail load and show up yellow and I get still waiting on root device". Any ideas?

Hey, its all running nicely now - sound, network, all seems to be running sweet. installed vlc but seems to be a slight problem as no video output, just a black screen. i'll work it out tho :)
