Puttabong 01-26-2008 01:47 AM

No, it's perfect. :) The Performance increased a lot since it has EFI.
The system performance feels very smooth, and programs open (even) faster than on Rev1. :)

System Updater told me that everything is up to date - iTunes and other Programs that I tested work nice.

It basically feels like the RC1 that I customized for a week or two to make it work nicely,
but much more smooth and faster, I guess that's because the stock kexts work very well together.

Edit: The processor load is now at about 4-8%, with the same programs opened Rev1 had 20%, wow!

Good Job!

zephyroth 01-26-2008 01:48 AM

Ouf ... :-)

naquaada 01-26-2008 01:50 AM

I don't see a big difference, I even have the feeling that's a bit slower. Would it be a difference if I use GUID? Would it still be possible to use Dual-Boot with the Windows boot selector?

zephyroth 01-26-2008 01:55 AM

Did you try XBench or another bench to see if it's really slower ?

Looks like this works can you please include this
Still i have to test it ... will check it on Jas 10.4.8 installation & post you the result :)

Please read my comments about the touchpad kext here: http://osx.kbot.de/comments.php?DiscussionID=17&page=3#Item_36

I don't know if this kext is compatible with the normal one but I guess it's worth to find out.

Puttabong 01-26-2008 02:10 AM

zeph, actually the computer is now also much more Quiet!

When I had lots of applications opened on Rev1, then it would become slower and the performance would decrease.

Now there aren't any loud or busy sounding sounds =D

edit: I currently have 15 Applications opened, Installing an Adobe Suite, and I'm adding about 1000 songs to iTunes and browse the Web using Safari with many tabs open, and it's quite and everything runs like with zero apps opened :>

naquaada 01-26-2008 02:16 AM

@ zephyroth:

I tried Xbench and the CPU seems to be slower. On RC1 I got over 86 sometimes, on RC2 it was mostly 79-82, maximum was 85. But overall it seems to be a better, about 106 compared to 105. But I have kinda feeling it's slower. I'm now restructuring my HD with GUID partition table.

rockybt18 01-26-2008 02:22 AM

bonkey there is something new about my beta subscription? I have a lot of time tonight and next week.

This is my second machine, 4200+ X2 rev2 works like a charm, congratulations Zephyrot, this is the best installer ever!!!

With Appleyukon2.kext I have kernel panic on reboot for A8N32-sli dlx , much better the first version.

I am going to see the FixGUID.. i have been very busy, sorry...:D

Great work!!!

riangeli 01-26-2008 04:34 AM

Roisoft

It seems you have same processor like mine is :D
what MB do you have on it? Do you have AM2 Boost or etc Enabled?
and have you PS2 keyboard? i have PS2 keyboard problem in rev.1 and it keeps
bother me even i add the ApplePS2Controller.kext :(

roisoft 01-26-2008 05:01 AM

I have an "old" motherboard A8n32-sli dlx 939 socket. I don´t have problems with my PS2 devices.

naquaada 01-26-2008 04:15 PM

So, formatted and installed the system with GUID partition table - with the result that's not booting 'Non system disk'. Is this normal?

zephyroth 01-26-2008 04:18 PM

yeah ... As I've not tested GUID yet I can't know if it works or not and ... seeing your posts makes me think it doesn't work at all ! But hey it's beta.

naquaada 01-26-2008 06:12 PM

RC2 beta - it's nothing for absolute beginners.

I did a really noobie installation, HD was formatted with MBR. I didn't use the optional installs. Result: nothing working.

1st Problem: HD wasn't bootable
2nd Problem: No partition was to able to make bootable! I tested all 3 partitions on my system, nothing, I didn't even came to the Darwin menu. HD drive LED was on all the time as it should start booting. HD was IDE Primary Master and there was no other drive in the computer.
3rd Problem: When I left the installation DVD in the drive was booting, but stopped after a few seconds, but without a kernel panic. I couldn't check why 'cause the grey boot screen is activated. But I didn't get the message to switch off the computer, so it couldn't be a kernel panic.

Here' my suggestions for now:

Default settings:

- AC97Audio
- nForce Chipset
- forcedeth driver
- MBR bootwriter

I recommend these things not only 'cause I have an nForce Chipset but they were activated in every Tiger DVD and should run fine. The nForce chipset is also rather common. The MBR bootloader should be default 'cause the most people are using MBR and GUID seems not to be working yet. Other things:

Optional settings:

- verbose mode (for error checking)

Installation DVD changes:

- only select the English and language which was selected during the installation. I had this already in an image.
- maybe a direct entering of the optional installs? I also had this, it's not Apple-Style but so it can't be overlooked.
- some install options should be already collapsed, f.e. graphics drivers and chipset drivers.

I'm trying a second n00bie installation now, will tell you what happened soon.

naquaada 01-26-2008 07:20 PM

So, test of 3rd n00bie-Installation, this time half-n00b 'cause i selected the MBR bootloader.

This time it booted, but it stopped very soon. I tested with -v, the first pause came at the Firewire initialization, after this 'waiting for root device'. No nForce driver...

naquaada 01-26-2008 07:35 PM

I think we should wait till the 10.5.2 update is released and AMD fixed, look at the mass of changes:

http://www.macscoop.com/articles/2008/01/20/mac-os-x-10-5-2-update-bring-endless-list-fixes

zephyroth 01-26-2008 07:46 PM

YES that's the main reason why Rev.2 has not been released yet.

rockybt18 01-26-2008 08:45 PM

Bonkey i've left to you a message on insanelymac forum.Give me there the instructions if you can. Tnx

bonkey 01-26-2008 10:50 PM

Rockybt18.

You are downloading the wrong version. You need to download the EFI Release!.

rockybt18 01-26-2008 11:01 PM

Oh crap!! Thought I needed the other version ;)
No problem.

zephyroth 01-26-2008 11:12 PM

Naquaada

What do you think of this ?

naquaada 01-26-2008 11:29 PM

@ zephyroth

Like the first pic. I would close Audio drivers and Network drivers. I liked it better when wired LAN and Wifi had seperate folders. Have you the VIA Rhine ethernet driver, crawle was searching it. Azalia is High Definition Audio, right? How about combining the TOH Kernel, Plocies supplémentarires and the bootloaders alltogether in a 'System' folder, MBR bootloader selected as default?

Here's the k'd paragon NTFS driver for MacOS. Test it, on my system it actually isn't working, but i only have an Tiger SSE2 system actually. The HD's are recognized, but I can't activate them in Disk Utility. It's a .zip file, not .rar, so rename it.

zephyroth 01-26-2008 11:35 PM

Ok I will modify the Network section.
I can put the VIA Rhine kext.
Azalia is High Definition Audio.

I prefer to let the choice between MBR and GUID and to put them in Bootloader folder (because I will add more bootloaders installation).

I'm not using Paragon NTFS but MacFuse and NTFS-3G , it's working great on my sytem.

roisoft 01-27-2008 12:02 AM

Yes, Macfuse and Ntfs-3g works great.

DoiX 01-27-2008 12:11 AM

paragon works with my system.. macfuse and ntfs-3g unmounts my ntfs partitions permanently

Bing 01-27-2008 12:49 AM

well, zephyroth, just wondering if you can release rev.2 for now?

and as for 10.5.2 you can release it as rev.3 which everybody would still looking forward to

gully666uk 01-27-2008 12:53 AM

can you include sb600 kexts please for my motherboard to install, as it takes so long to install without them.thank you its all ready included

rockybt18 01-27-2008 12:54 AM

Rev.2 is not ready. It needs to be more tested. As you see in these thread there are several problems that need to be corrected.
On topic: In an hour max I finish to down and I start testing on my notebook. Coming soon with impressions. Hope that I can boot it directly not using VMWare.
Wish me luck.

Zeph, is this for NTFS Write support? wanna share? :)

Puttabong 01-27-2008 01:10 AM

Bonkey, MacFuse is free, download it here:

http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/downloads/list

DoiX 01-27-2008 01:24 AM

oh yeah :) finally managed to install rc2(don't know how i did it but it works) :)

naquaada 01-27-2008 01:31 AM

I had sometimes a strange problem that I couldn't repartition: Disk Utility said it couldn't deactivate the partition (which the system was installed to, partition 2 in my case). After a reboot it is possible.

zephyroth 01-27-2008 02:22 AM

or you can force unmount using Terminal.

Puttabong 01-27-2008 02:22 AM

zephyroth, Tested RC2 for 1 day now, and I can confirm that it's rock solid and the performance is perfect!

Greetings

DoiX 01-27-2008 02:26 AM

glad to hear that puttabong :) i'm testing RC2 for about an hour and i get random freezes, i think the cause is my ntfs hard disk...

naquaada 01-27-2008 02:27 AM

zephyroth: I could unmount them manually in Disk Utility, but it wasn't unmounting them automatically.

DoiX 01-27-2008 02:33 AM

lol heres a strange thing :)) my ata drives are being detected as sata =))

naquaada 01-27-2008 03:08 AM

DoiX: These are so problems which aren't so easy to solve. My NEC ND-3540A DVD-RW drive is not detected in BIOS but it works without problems in MacOS, I even can burn with it.
What do you have 4 a controller? My onbard Siliconimage SiI3114 Raid Controller was shown on Parallel-SCSI devices ;)

DoiX 01-27-2008 03:59 AM

its not a big problem i just said it's strange :).... my report RC2 works great... faster the rev1 (xbench score 33) rev2 RC2 (xbench score 66) and i found out what's causing the freezes, windows xp partition :)

Lion1985 01-27-2008 04:52 AM

Zephyroth have u got a bet tester with this system or anything like that ?

Mobo: ASROCK, AM2NF3-VSTA (socket AM2) (sound onboard CM6501)
Chipset: nVidia nForce3 250
Cpu: AMD ATHLON 64 x2 @ 2,3 ghz (SSE2+SSE3 is included)
Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 7600GS (256mb)
HD: Samsung 230gb
ram: 1gb no name 533
DVD: NEC DVD RW ND-4551A

if u havent any testers like that im rdy for that to test and i give here full report back, i have enough time for that.
u can contact me at insanlymac forum as Lion2008, or email me [email protected]

Good luck Zephyroth

Jojo 01-27-2008 06:44 AM

@ zephyroth

Is it possible to run the Rev.2 using VMWare?

Greetings

rfuilrez 01-27-2008 08:46 AM

Well, everyone else is doing it so....

AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+ (Socket 939)
Asus A8N5X Mainboard
ATI x1600 Pro 512mb
2GB Corsair DDR400

Can I beta too?

vinbuntu 01-27-2008 02:51 PM

Why don't some one release it on Rapidshare, so we all can test the darn thing? Thus it would be perfected faster. And no one except for the uploader would lose some bandwidth and time. You can password protect the thing and PM the codes and links to earlier members only. I want to see how much of your work is going to work on my 6150 go notebook and x1250 690G desktop. And figure out a way to modify the kext to get it to work. I am not hoping the nvidia 6150 go will work at all, because the way it was designed and was especially designed for HP. but if the x1250 was somewhat based on the x700 I am sure there should be a way to make it work fully, because even thought it uses shared memory its was designed to at least to the OS as seen as a separate card, attached to PCI-e x16 slot. Thus avivo and can operate independently even with another ATI avivo compatitible card inserted allowing for upto 4 monitors to simultaniously operate. The motherboard I have is the M2A-VM HDMI, shitty board, it was a M2A-VM at first than, it was fucked up and they gave me this as a replacement, but without the HDMI card attachment. But at least I got a firewire plug now. Never really used it because it really suck with all the bad BIOS implementation. After like 7 months Asus finally got it right with the newest BIOS 1604 beta. Now it is usable. Like a MB should be. I aleady have a hackintosh built with Intel, was using TOH and not all things was recongnised until I did a fresh installation with Kalyway's Leopard release. Now even thought most of the stuff works, I still cannot shut down fully, I can restart, it can't sleep using vanilla kernel and it kernel panics all the time. Especially went I decompress my downloads. Every single time. I don't know if it is because it doesn't like my Q6600 or what, but I am frustrated, Don't see anyone else having this problem. I am still trying to figure out how to do the EFI-GFX thing netkas has introduced. Supposely gets all video cards working and even full audio. But everyone in the osx86scene forum seems to be speaking Martian or something. No step by step guide, justa bunch of gibberish to me. Tiger was so much easier to mod, when all I have to do was buy part close to the real thing as possible. But once you get a taste you want all your computers to run as much mac as possible and as powerful as you can afford. Just to show the world that we can build a faster Mac Pro for 1/4 of the price of the real thing.

naquaada 01-27-2008 05:12 PM

Info: Paragon NTFS isn't working on my systems, neither on Tiger nor on Leopard.

zephyroth 01-27-2008 05:22 PM

Vinbuntu --->

Imagine if I release it on Rapidshare. Imagine the number of people who will ask me the password ...
And how can we organize us in order to have clean reports if thousands of persons test it ?

I think it's not a good idea and by seeing how much persons ask to beta test I believe the majority just hope to see it working on their system.

So a few number of beta testers with different systems (representative of the majority of AMD systems) is a good way to improve Rev.2.

naquaada 01-27-2008 05:31 PM

Zephyroth:

For upgrade and repairing reasons: How about about a bootable CD which does not contain the system, only drivers and maybe updates. It should be possible to deinstall drivers from there if something goes wrong during the main installation. It should be optimized for a really quick boot, so no language selection and so on, a direct jump into the drive selection menu and then the menu for optional installations. The only Utilities are Terminal and Disk Utility, maybe prepared with Xslimmer (intel code only) to save space. If it fits to CD size it's also easier to download than a new DVD image. Would this be possible?

zephyroth 01-27-2008 05:46 PM

naquaada ----->

Yes that's a good idea but I can make a distribution package to update the spare partition (on which you have restored Beta 2) too. This will be more easy to do.
This way after update if all goes well all you'll have to do is to recreate a bootable ISO.
