Nexuiz is a 3d deathmatch game that has been in development since the summer of 2002. The goal of the project is to create a high quality first person shooter that can be played freely across all platforms in one package: PC, Mac, and can be even included in Linux distributions. The game is entirely open source, with the sources of the engine, gamecode, map files, and compiling tools, all included with the download, all under the GPL license. The gameplay is deathmatch with the most excessive possible speeds and weapons, giving incredibly intense fast paced action. Along with deathmatch, there are muitple gamemodes such as team deathmatch, capture the flag, domination, and many mutators and weapon options like rocket arena and instagib. The user can fight through the single player campaign, going through over 20 levels, or play online with our server browser. Nexuiz is based on the Darkplaces engine, built on OpenGL technology. The darkplaces engine is an advanced Quake1 based engine developed mainly by Forest "LordHavoc" Hale, who has been working with the Quake1 engine for many years. A few of Darkplaces main features are Quake3bsp support, realtime lighting and shadowing, new particle effects, advanced menu system, and Md3 model support. We have a very open development team, allowing online developers to help with the project in level design, modelling, or programming. Contact us by email, or our IRC channel #alientrap on irc.anynet.org, if you would like to help with development. System Requirements 400 MB of hard drive space Windows 2000/XP/Vista (32-bit or 64-bit) Mac OS X 10.4 or better (PPC or x86) Linux Kernel 2.2 or better with glibc High Quality/Recommended - A 1.5 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500+ or better - 9600ati or 5700fx or better - 512 MB of ram or better Low Quality - 1 Ghz Pentium III or AMD Athlon - Geforce2 Video card - 512 MB of ram |
I will definitely be setting up a server soon. It will probably be called Leo4All, OSx86, or Infinite Mac. Enjoy! and hope to see you all play online! =)

this game is awesome been playing it for about an hour or so
it is just like ut2004 |
the darn game wont work on my pc:) it stays at a black screen i can hear the sound but i can't see anything
|
DoiX, are you using this on Mac OS X or some other operating system? Bhast2 and I were playing each other like for more than hour late last night, and he didn't appear to have any problems playing on Mac.
|
Hm, it's nothing for me, I don't like ego-shooters. I prefer small games with good ideas, like Zuma, Plasma Pong, Biofilm and of course all the LucasFilm games using ScummVM. Since I got Worms 3D on the Mac (it's on the demon), I really have a hate on 3D games. Worms Director's Cut on AGA Amigas was so great, I played it for hours. But this 3D stuff is only $%/&$§?!!
|
Sorry, me neither, I don't game.
I don't have the time to do it & I rather like to improve my knowledge instead. :-) |
Puttabong, I agree with you. However, for the OSx86 community, it would be fun to see who is a better gamer, lol. I don't like to game either, and funny to say, this is the only game, I've played since the last two years. =) I like to gain more knowledge about the necessary things in life than some game. :D
Yet it is fun to play with people you have been blogging with in the last four months. - Cheers. =) |
If you want to see a great freeware game, try Plasma Pong. It's a remake of the first video game ever but a real color explosion. Unfortunately it's not available official anymore due to copyright reasons, so you have to search the bay or the demon. There are seperate versions for PPC and Intel.
|
Have you tried Tremulous? That game is also based on the Quake-4 engine.
Nexuiz looks like Unreal Tournament. =)) |
I uploaded Plasma Pong here. Use the maximal resolution of your monitor and set the particles to 1999. I have in 1600x1200 an average of 48-52 fps.
WinLinMac01: I don't like ego-shooters at all. The games I like most have a good game idea which is still easy to play. But the best ideas were already used in the 80's and 90's, so you'll find the classic games in pimped versions. This is not good in all cases, but Plasma Pong is a really great remake. |
I know, but these games are open source, so I play them once in a while.
I like mostly simulation games like Sim City and Need for Speed. =)) Thats a really good game you uploaded. Thank you very much! I wish the classic version was emulated for PC's. =) |
Sim City was first available on the Amiga in the 90's, and the predecessor of NFS was 'Test Drive' on the C64. Yes, it was a real predecessor, not only another car-driving game.
We had everything already. 'The Sims' were the 'Little Computer People' on the Atari 800 XL and C64 in the 80's. One of the first multiplayer strategy games was 'M.U.L.E' on the Atari XL in 1983. RPG games we had with the 'Ultima' Series on the C64 and Amiga - a very crazy version was the 'Elvira' series. The predecessor of 'Wolfenstein 3D' was 'Castle of Wolfenstein' on the C64. Games with Ego-perspective were f.e. 'The Eidolon' on the Atari 800XL and the C64. The greatest game ideas ever were 'Lemmings' and 'Worms' - from the Amiga. Blown-up 3D-versions were made for the PC. 'Networking games' were already on the CBM PET 2001 series (maybe beginning 80's) available, connected with the user-port. On the Amiga you could connect 'Lotus Turbo Challenge 2' via serial port to another Amiga and play simultaneusly with 4 players in split-screen mode. And even on the C64 is an actual game 'Wizard of Wor Tournament' which is for up to 8 real player - on an computer with 0,9 MHz. But two 4-player adapters are neccessary. Games using vector graphics (using software 3D engine) were available since the Atari 800XL. Which 'new' game ideas were developed on the PC? |

Wow, I think I mixed Nexuiz and Tremulous, lol. I would assume the latest versions are running the latest source codes. My mistake. =)
|
The Quake 4 source won't be available for quite some time. The only way for these games to run on that engine is to made as mods which would require Q4 to be installed.
|
Hey, do we want to rename the thread in 'Mac Gaming' or something like this? It's not so fixed to one game then.
|
Affirmative! Title has been changed. :-)
|
Now you're in my domain ;-)
|
Copy that, lol. How many of you game? =p
|
I've been gaming since the 1970's :-D
|
Nice, I've been gaming since the late 90's. =))
Now, let's not change the name of this thread to How many of you game? LOL. |
I just installed ScummVM on my new installation. Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken, Indy 3, Indy 4, Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2. These games need only 47MB and the playing times of every game vary between one hour to 3,5 hours - if you play with solution and only one variation. If you have to find all puzzles by yourself you need a lot more time. In Maniac Mansion you can play with 25 combinations of players, each has a different solution. If you're interested, I can upload them to rapidshare, pre-installed.
|
I guess since the late 80ies. Commodore C16 at first ;)
At my OSX i play Tombraider at the moment and i would love to try out ememy territory quake wars. but i dont want to buy another copy as i got it already for win :( I donīt need a mac for ScummVM, i got my WM mobile phone for that LOL |
Anyway, I created a .dmg for the best Lucasfilm Games, you can download them HERE. Installing the games is easy, just copy the files to the folders like they are placed in the image.
Included games are: Maniac Mansion (Amiga + PC-EGA) Zak MacKracken (Amiga + FM-Towns) Indiana Jones 3 - the Last Crusade (PC-VGA) The Secret of Monkey Island (PC-VGA + Mac Classic) LeChuck's Revenge (Amiga + Mac Classic) Indiana Jones 4 - the Fate of Atlantis (Amiga) Each game is in available in English and German, that's why different platforms are used. Maniac Mansion EGA version has the cool PC-speaker sound ;) I also used some smoothing algorithms, if you like real old-style pixel graphics you have to disable them. If you like those games, get the full FM-Towns versions of Zak McKracken and Indiana Jones 3 and the PC-CD versions of Monkey Island and Indiana Jones 4. |
Plasma Pong is great! =)
|
Hehe - the easiest game ideas are often the best ;-)
It's crazy with that game - the first levels I always have no problems. Between the levels 12-19 I loose the most of my lives. After level 20 the problems are gone - once I played from level 17 to 23 with only one life! Levels beneath 23 I vote as bad for me, the best was level 26 on Leopard and I think level 32 on Tiger. How fast is it on your machine? I have in 1600x1200 and 1999 particles about 57-62 fps on my Athlon 64 4000+ @ 2.63 GHz. |
I find out my fps and update you in a bit. =) I actually surpassed those levels already, lol. I like the graphics especially. Retro.
|
The graphics are really the last what's retro. This is the looks of the original Pong:
http://re3.yt-thm-a02.yimg.com/image/25/m2/2342978294 For all gamers who don't like playing with the keyboard, try ControllerMate. It's a great prog running in the background which advises all types of controllers (f.e gamepads, joysticks whatever) a new function. So in the easiest way you can tell it that if one button on the controller is pressed than it sends a defined key stroke. This works for every program, so you could f.e. control FrontRow with a gamepad. Or Plasma Pong, while we were talking about it. But the program is very complex. It has functions to dectect if a controller is existing to assign the functions only if its connected. You can create complete controller pages only for special applications. It's also possible to group these. ControllerMate detects if an application is running in the foreground or in the background so that you can react on this. There are logic functions and much more. Controllers are calibrateable, of course. It's a great prog and not too expensive, take a look at it if you like to play. BTW: I actually installed an Amiga Emulator on my Mac - now I can play my favourite games there. I don't like the inbuilt joystick control, so I use a normal keyboard layout and assign the joystick with ControllerMate to the Emulator. The Competition Pro USB is a great joystick, it's as good as the original one. |
