Has anybody tried this? I only updated my system to 10.5.3 this week, but it appears an update is already available: Mac OS X 10.5.4 Delta Update - 4 June 2008. I think it's a pre-release build, so I won't jump on it yet, all the more so since I don't have a testing partition available... The update can be found at the usual places together with a Safari 4 developer preview version which I installed and seems to be working fine ;).

WinLinMac01 06-11-2008 12:28 AM

WHAT?! Looks like a fake. Can someone confirm this? Well, I have an ADC account, and I don't see anything official yet in my zone. =p

HCE 06-11-2008 01:41 AM

I agree it could be a fake, haven't tried to download and look inside the package yet. However, the same uploader put up a developer preview version of Safari 4, which I downloaded and installed, and that is what he says it was, so he may be on to something...

HCE 06-11-2008 01:54 AM

Ok, I downloaded it and looked inside it with Pacifist. It appears to be a genuine update from 10.5.3 to 10.5.4, but I believe it's still in beta stages at this point, I'd try it if I had a spare Leopard installation, but I don't, so I'll let it rest for now.

WinLinMac01 06-11-2008 02:03 AM

Lin'q? Did you find it in ADC?

HCE 06-11-2008 02:24 AM

No, not in ADC, it can be found in the bay.

Puttabong 06-11-2008 12:48 PM

Isn't the next update going to be Snow Leopard, which is 10.6? I too believe that this is a fake.

naquaada 06-11-2008 03:26 PM

The 10.5.4 update or 10.6 ? But if they go on with the updates so fast, they'll be at 10.6 very soon, or we have version numbers like 10.5.11 like in Tiger :-P

Puttabong 06-11-2008 03:28 PM

Hi, Naquaada,
I meant that 10.5.4 might be a fake because Snow Leopard 10.6 is already confirmed :-)

http://www.apple.com/macosx/snowleopard/

However, it's scheduled to ship in about a year - so we could see 10.5.4 before.

WinLinMac01 06-11-2008 06:03 PM

Go Snow Leopard! =O

Next year is a long way off. We'll definitely be seeing 10.5.9 before Snow Leopard is released. The 10.5.4 update is more than likely genuine as it was seeded to developers last week. For those who are interested the build number is 9D34 and the seed note cites AirPort, AFP, Active Directory/Directory Services, iCal, iChat, ppp, printing, ruby and samba as focus areas.

It depends on what type of ADC membership you have. Only premium users will get the seeds. Like I mentioned above, it's already been seeded.

I hope the name changes. 'Snow Leopard' is a bit silly after releasing 'Leopard' some time before. Sounds like a bit like a sub-version, in Tiger this could habe be 'Siberian Tiger', 'Indian Tiger' and so on. BTW, if would be the first MacOS version which has two words in the 'Nickname'.

R0GUE 06-11-2008 06:39 PM

It's much better than OS X 10.5 Service Pack One :-P

naquaada 06-11-2008 06:49 PM

I also thought something like this, but wouldn't say it loud :-D

creative_ 06-11-2008 06:50 PM

Yeah I like the name. There will be no new features, Apple said. It will be an optimization of Leopard. Slimmer, faster and core improvement.

naquaada 06-11-2008 06:54 PM

I hope it's not so improved as Quicktime 7.5 :-P

R0GUE 06-11-2008 07:20 PM

I suspect Snow Leopard will be what Puma was to Cheetah, though Leopard is in no way anything like Cheetah in terms of usability and speed, I'm just making comparisons as 10.1 was one huge bug fix with added optimisations and it was free.

I believe the new iPhone will require 10.5.4 and iTunes 7.7, so we should see those updates soon before the iPhone 3G comes out on July 11th.

Due to the AMD Updater bug I found out that the 10.5.4 Delta Update needs NO patching. here's the log file.
The system was rebooting immediately, no gfx patches or other things neccessary. But don't be too euphoric, the system freezes sometimes when you click to fast on the finder. The mouse is still moveable. I'm just running Onyx.

EDIT: After Onyx the system still freezes. I removed all open finder windows and logged out. I logged in again and started the AMD Updater, it showed me AirPort Utility and Quicktime 7.5. Now the mds process for Spotlight is working at 140% (Dual-Core CPU). The system is still working, no freezes.

EDIT2: After finishing the Spotlight rebuilding the system seems to work fine. BTW: I installed the AutoPatchDaemon before, and I had a weird error message. Maybe this was also a problem. Some Xbench gfx tests are a bit better as in 10.5.3.

EDIT3: 10.5.4 doesn't forgive anything before it's finshed booting. I installed Quicktime 7.5, a click to early and it freezed. But installing QT 7.5 was no good idea, now the system freezes very soon. I'll revert to 10.5.3 later and test it again.

bhast2 06-13-2008 02:01 AM

the way it sounds is we shouldn't even try to update to 10.5.4

naquaada 06-13-2008 02:10 AM

No, I installed it again, (finished at 2:20 am) and it still freezes if you click to often on the desktop. Reminds me on Workbench 1.4 alpha on the Amiga, if you click on the Workbench background you always got an error message in the menu bar. But this thing had a lot more errors... real fun for a beta-testing freak like me ;-)
