OS X Tips and Tricks and Hotkeys
Let's do a collection of Tips and Tricks or Gags or our beloved operating system.
Ctrl+Win+Alt+8: Inverted screen, looks weird in color. Windows, have no shadows anymore, they are glowing :) holding F12: opens and closes the master DVD drive, Win+F12 the secondary (if you have one) holding ctrl + F12: opens the logout/restart/turn off requester. This is the fastest way to turn off a mac: Hold ctrl + F12 a while and press return. This if especcially useful if you have no display connected or a gfx driver problem. Tips for Expsose: I always put 'All Windows' in the lower right corner and Spaces in the lower left corner. 'Show desktop' is on the middle mouse button. Spaces: Only use one row with 4 colums. So you can easily swith through all 4 screens with Crtl and Crsr-left. ctrl + mouse wheel: zooms the whole screen content |
Could we please collect the hotkeys with apple keys (Win?...) :-D
I can't believe that most of you use Windows Keyboards? How can you?! I use the following shortcuts a lot: Code:
command+shift+3 Code:
command+shift+4 Code:
command+shift+4, then spacebar |
win+(left|right) - previous word, next word
alt+(left|right) - start of line, end of line does work with shift for selection. |
while trying to figure out why the ctrl+winkey+alt+8 trick doesn't work i stumbled upon a crazy key combination Ctrl+alt+winkey+7, to use it click on the apple logo (just for example) and hold the key combo, your menus will go crazy :))

A very useful hot key, renaming files fast
Code:
alt + left click |
To quickly move files/folders to the trash:
Code:
Command+Backspace Code:
Command+Shift+Backspace |
Guys: Don't use always these quotes, the threads are getting to long with them.
R0GUE: alt + left click doesn't work for me, either Mac Alt/option key nor Windows Alt key. Other hotkeys: Code:
Win + Empty Trash Code:
Alt + Shift + G |
To get info on a file/folder; highlight it then:
Code:
Command+i Code:
Command+Shift+N Code:
Command+Spacebar Code:
Command+Alt+Spacebar |
shift-alt+winkey+backspace
^to empty the trash without warning^ shift+left click close button ^ to close a widget in slow motion^ alt+drag ^let's you arrange the items in the menu^ winkey+alt+d ^hide/unhide dock^ |
btw, my favorite (unix) way to start applications is to open spotlight (mapped it to win+space) and type first letters of the application name. That's not exactly same as running apps in e.g. Linux/KDE, but you get more features like built-in calculator ;)

Just found a cool new shortcut, you can quick preview any file by selecting it and pressing the space bar or Command + Y
|
Using Alt + Command + Y you can start a diashow with the selected files (pics). On a Win keyboard it's Start + Alt + Y
|
A really useful shortcut is pressing Enter (return) key when an item is highlighted and then you can rename.. So you don't have to Right Click, I mean Alt-Click, and press rename! :)
|
You can also do this by clicking the icon first and then and click on the name.
