[How To] PNY GeForce 7600GS 512MB AGP
This is for 10.5.6.
I recently bought a 7600GS 512MB AGP card, and I was informed that all 7x00 series cards that had more than 256MB VRAM had issues in OS X that required flashing the ROM BIOS on the card. Thanks to another member on InsanelyMac, the card is now working at FULL 512MB, with QE/CI+Rotation WITHOUT FLASHING THE BIOS! No more risking a bricked GFX card. Here's how you can do it: First, download these kexts and extract them to a safe location. Make sure that you have UInstaller by ~pcwiz installed. Next, make sure to go into your extensions folder ( /System/Library/Extensions ) and delete all Intel and ATI video drivers. Using UInstaller, check the option to install kexts from HD, and then press browse and select all the kexts you downloaded from the link above, and then press install. Next, delete Extensions.mkext in /System/Library and reboot, and at darwin, type -f. |
i've got a 7600gs too... but 256mb, and i'm beating with it to make it work on your ipcx86 release. i didn't ticked any graphic driver on installation, so osx start in vga mode, but then, i tried several injectors, tried old kexts working with 10.5.5 and the result it is always black screen with idle cursor and stop.
Restart with -x in safemode give a 1680x1050 right resolution (without qe and ci) with most of them. (Vendor: NVIDIA (0×10de) Device ID:0×0392 Revision ID: 0×00a1) |
Add your device ID into the kexts, the 512MB and 256MB cards have different ID's.
|
which injector do you think it's best? nvdarwin, nvinject or what else?
|
Any that work. I recommend using the 7600GS package on iPC, boot with -x, change the ID to your cards' ID in the proper kexts and reboot with -f. The NVinject in that package is what I use and it's working just fine.

Thanks... i'll try soon when i'll be home.
p.s. which are the proper kexts that i must modify? |
Just these:
GeForce.kext NVDANV40Hal.kext NVDAResman.kext |
thanks again...
|
So, perfect, i modify kexts inserting my id... needed to modify the injector kext too and on reboot with -f i had full resolution and CI + QE.
I had issues with finder prefs and keyboard panel, resolved with files from 10.5.5. Last problem, well it's not a real problem, is the processor name in sys info, my athlon5200 is seeing as an intel core2duo... may be a problem? is there a solution that i don't know? Kernel is 32bit in default? at 64 running as well? |
Glad to hear that it worked for the most part. (I didn't have to use any graphics stuff from 10.5.5 though, so that's weird that you did.)
As for the CPU name, I think it's done on purpose to allow compatibility with apps that do CPUID checking. You can manually fix it in About This Mac, but as far as it's appearance in System Profiler, I think you're SOL as long as you're using Voodoo XNU 9.5.0. I wont get too deep into it (this thread isn't for it, but check out the Voodoo documentation which you can find on the site, it's very helpful). |
It's important to install the correct applesmbios too.
I reinstalled again all release, and, with same graphics kexts modified by me (mentioned in post above), qe and ci were not working. So i banged my head to understand what i changed from previous installation... i changed only smbios, AppleSMBIOS-28 instead than AppleSMBIOS-27rev3-800. Reinstall AppleSMBIOS-27rev3-800 and magically qe and ci were working again. Which is the difference from an smbios and another and which is the best? |

The Leopard kernel is 32bit. 64bit kernel we just have in snow leopard.
|
Voodoo's 9.5 kernel is both 32 and 64 bit, on 10.5.5 i was running perfectly 64bit. Only problem was PPC appz not running, 'cause Rosetta not working...
|
That you can run 64bit apps doesnt mean the kernel itself is 64bit, and voodoo kernel is thin, just containing i386 architecture.
|
Hara... is it working for you the tv output?
I tried several times but no success.. black screen. |

hello there and thanx for your guide..
heres what i did: 1)In terminal i typed: rm -rf /system/library/extensions/NV* rm -rf /system/library/extensions/Ge* rm -rf /system/library/extensions/Natit* so as to remove all Intel and ATI video drivers as you said. 2)I installed downloaded kexts using Uinstaller 3)In terminal i typed: cd /System/Library rm -Rf Extensions.mkext so as to delete Extensions.mkext as you said. i rebooted with -f and it stucks at the grey screen with the apple logo. It is loading for some time and then everything freezes. Same happens when i try to boot in safe mode. What should i do? any suggestions???? :( |

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1434/130cou.jpg http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/130cou.jpg/1/w1024.pngand the only resolution 1024x768, have i done sth wrong? |
You do not have an AGP graphics card. Are you sure it's 512MB as well? My card's Device ID is:
Code:
Device ID: 0x02e1 |
ok.. im sorry for the mess...
the thing im sure is that i own a geforce 7600gs 512mb nothing more :-) so is there another guide to help me for my card ? |
Just install as per the guide, but in the GeForce.kext, NVDANV40Hal.kext and NVDAResman.kext, edit the plists and replace the Device ID that is there with your cards' Device ID. That should work.
|
thanx for that..:)
i'll try it as soon as i get home.. ill post the result... |
OK i did replace the device id to info.plist
into GeForce.kext, NVDANV40Hal.kext, NVDAResman.kext and NVinject.kext then followed the guide but still i can only boot in safe mode and no ci/qe.... http://www.imageshack.gr/files/cpyon...r5lo_thumb.jpg |
I am not entirely sure why that isn't working for you, as it is now showing your correct VRAM size. The only thing I can say is that maybe you should try to use a different injector, such as NVkush or NVdarwin.
But, this is not the place to troubleshoot it, this is for the AGP version. |
ok thanx anyway ...........

Hello -
Will this procedure and the kexts work for a nVidia 7600 512MB PCIe card. I suppose that the brand is ZOTAC. Thanks... |
