Which Mac(s) do you use or own?

Hi,

Which Apple Macs are you using at home or at work?

Who still owns a classic mac, such as the Macintosh Classic II?

R0GUE 04-23-2009 11:38 AM

At home I'm running a MacBook Pro with Leopard and two G4 'Sawtooth' PowerMacs (both running Tiger). At work we have an assortment of G4 and G5 PowerMacs and iMacs of which I use a dual 2Ghz G5 PowerMac.

Puttabong 04-23-2009 11:46 AM

Thanks for sharing, R0GUE. What display/monitor do you use attached to your PowerMac? :)

I'm running the same MacBook Pro at home and at work.

naquaada 04-23-2009 01:27 PM

I've got a Mini G4 1.58 GHz, but it's defective now. I have no idea why, after I experimented with an PPC Linux it isn't starting anymore. Starting sound appears, Memory test works (loud beep after starting without RAM) but no picture. I tried nearly all methods to reset, aren't working. Nah, it's not so important. I also have an Apple Newton 120, does anyone know this thing?

The Apple product I'm using every day is the Apple Remote.

Voyn1x 04-23-2009 01:38 PM

I run a Macbook Pro at home which soon will be joined by a Macmini ....and if the wife allows it... a 24" Apple Display. At work I use a 2.8GHz Quad-Core MacPro :D

oooohhh that sounds fun! May I ask what kinda work you do with the MacPro? Graphic designing perhaps?

LawlessPPC 04-24-2009 12:55 PM

does my 2 performa's with 8.1 count with 68060's under shapeshifter and fusion

AndrewNZ 04-27-2009 10:02 AM

Currently a 24" MacIntel iMac and a G5 Power Mac connected to a 20" Cinema display - (one of the transparent plastic 'tripod' models). Had an iBook G4 which has been handed down to offspring and since retired from lack of use.

Won't be buying a MacPro tower as they're just too high-end for my needs and wallet. The Hackintosh is fitting the bill rather well though. :)

Will definitely build a Hackintosh netbook since Apple won't. Just waiting for the right hardware and the EEE1008H is looking mighty good at the moment.

Andy.

I have a MacBook as my everyday computer, especially for college and traveling etc, then at home use my Hackintosh, specs are in sig :) It's really solid, all perfect!

Unfortunetely I do not own any modern style Apple computer.
However up in the attic I still have an Apple LCIII (complete with Apple printer, uses Canon BC02 ink cartridges...) running Mac OS 7.5.3.
I'm planning to get me a MBP though, as soon as I've earned enough money...

LCIII? System 7.5.3, ah the good old  Comps!

Good luck with the MBP ;)

I have a iBook G4, broken though..... think the memory or CPU is busted :(

Would run Panther, if it worked. :p

Mother owns a MacBook Air, wont let me use it :-/

Also an old PowerMac G3 in my room, still going smooth :) with original Screen, keyboard and mouse running OS8!

Well, the OSx86 scene has caused me to spend a lot of money to buy me the real thing. So now I have:

- Apple Macbook Pro 15.3", Core2Duo 2.93GHz, nVidia 9400M + nVidia 9600M GT/512MB, 4GB DDR3/1066, 320GB/7200rpm
- Apple 24" LED Cinema Screen
- Apple Wireless Keyboard
- Logitech V450 nano

http://gallery.sport-touring.eu/3_Va...90508_1070.jpg

http://gallery.sport-touring.eu/3_Va...90508_1071.jpg

Attached to the screen, I have a 1TB WD USB harddisk that is split 50/50 for Time Machine and storage of pics and stuff and archives I don't need/want to fill up my internal disk. I also have a 1TB NAS I can access wherever I am in the house.

I absolutely love this thing. It works so well, much better than the hack I have. And the screen is absolutely awesome. And I have to say, nothing works as intuitive as the multi-touch gestures on that big trackpad.

Apple probably (or should) has a love/hate relation with the OSx86 scene as MS has with illegal software. Without the hackint0sh I would never have spend close to $4,000 on a new computer. But it was worth it.

And no, I do not have a Dell. I just grabbed a mousepad from work years ago. :)

R0GUE 05-09-2009 12:29 PM

@throttlemeister; very nice indeed :)
If you ever get fed up with that set up let me know ;)

naquaada 05-09-2009 01:07 PM

The only Mac I'd need is a Mac Mini G4 with 1.5 GHz and 64 MB VRAM - but only to run AmigaOS 4 on it! :D

Voyn1x 05-09-2009 01:15 PM

@throttlemeister;

Serious monitor envy here!!! :-& :D

I hope to get my own 24" Apple Display in the next couple of months. How are you finding the small wireless keyboard, do you not miss the number pad at all?

naquaada 05-09-2009 01:25 PM

This small keyboard reminds me on the Amiga 600 which has also a sized down keyboard than the normal Amigas:

http://www.old-computers.com/museum/...00_front_1.jpg

http://www.amiga-hardware.com/downlo...1200_1_big.jpg

There were some tools to emulate the number pad for the Amiga 600 because some apps used these keys for special functions. Maybe there's something for the Mac too.

Oops: Do you recognize the keyboard layout of the Amiga 600? :D

You will love it when you get it. It is friggin HUGE (coming from a 17" 4:3 screen), but it is so beautiful and the image is amazing. I did calibrate it, as stock it is a bit over-saturated on the reds, but now it is gorgeous. Do realize it does not connect to anything, except the new Apple machines (currently the MBA, MBP, MP only) due to the mini-displayport connector

As for the keyboard, I find it very nice. I deliberately do got the one with the numeric pad, as I don't have a numeric pad when using the laptop by itself either. I find it is ok to be without, as long as you are consistent. If you are not, you will find it very lacking.

naquaada: the scarey AZERTY keyboard the Belgians and French use you mean? Completely impossible to type on!

Apple (or a third party) seriously needs to start considering making a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.

You had to calibrate the Apple display? That's curious. My Eizo Flexscan L997 TFT worked perfectly, not a single adjustment neccessary. The same was for all CRT monitors I had, only my Samsung Syncmaster 204B TFT had to be strongly calibrated, but this is a consumer model.

throttlemeister 05-09-2009 11:41 PM

I let my Spyder2Pro do its thing, and it did make changes. It is not like a huge difference, but it is there.

Noooooo, I had no idea that was the case. :'(

I've got a early 2008 Macbook Pro with a DVI connector. After a quick google, it seems like there is no adapter out there yet. I can't believe Apple didn't add a DVI socket for backwards compatibility!!

Oh well, looks like I need to find an alternative. I suppose I could look at the older model or maybe a dell... .......or buy a new mbp. :D

throttlemeister 05-10-2009 12:14 PM

LOL, nothing like an excuse to buy a new toy, uh? :D

Signal converter could process and convert the signals...
It is a rather expensive (but the only possible) solution...

DVI is a bit limited when it comes to very high resolutions. I think Apple (as well as the rest of the industry) tries to push this as a standard for computers. DisplayPort has bandwidth of 3 times the DVI dual link (which is limited to 2560x1600). And it is packet based so it is more like a network connection. I am sure that during the year there will be adpaters available but expect them to cost.

naquaada 05-10-2009 02:50 PM

And adding an DVI connector will cost more money, you know, Apple always takes care to build cheap computers. HA HA!

Apple creates some of their problems being not so widely used by theirselves. In the most cases you have to pay the most of the price only for the brand and the look-and-feel. Very annoying is that some parts cannot be replaced by cheaper PC hardware (RAM, gfx cards) and especially that they have only one year warranty. In Germany EVERY other product has two years by law, and the most manufacturers have three years manufacturers warranty, Seagate even five for their harddisks. I bought an Eizo monitor on ebay, but is still has warranty till 2011. It was defective not, I called them and will get a replacement monitor next week. That's what I call support! Apple computers may look nice, but really expandable is only the Mac Pro which a private user never could afford. Buying a standard PC or laptop with suitable hardware is always cheaper, and you get more, or do the actual Macbooks have eSATA ports and Firewire? Only for the look-and-feel for a real Mac I'm not paying the double price for getting less. And as I read from your last posts, Apple doesn't even use standard connectors which allows the use of other monitors, so I could throw away my Eizo monitor which I'm preferring because it uses a 4:3 format and no widescreen format. Apple may be everything, but not consumer-friendly.

The best thing they made was MacOS X, I don't need more than that. And if OSx86 runs stable on my 2006 AMD machines I don't need another computer, not even a newer Intel machine.

The MBP has firewire, no eSATA. And Apple DOES use standard connectors, and you CAN use a different monitor on their machines. There is a mini-displayport to DVI cable readily available. The problem described above is about the reverse: DVI to mini-displayport.

Yes they are expensive, but if I compare the same specs as my MBP to a non-Apple alternative with similar build quality, you end up with HP or Lenovo laptops in the same price range.

Sure you can get laptops cheaper. Sure, some will have more bells and whistles. And if those cheaper boxes is all you need/want, you would be crazy not to buy those instead of paying top dollar for an Apple. But if you want to run OS X, and you are comparing a $3000 Apple with a $2800 Lenovo, the story gets a little different. At least in my book.

It is all about CHOICE, and fortunately we have that choice.

i dont have a mac :( i wish i have one, currently using PC (iPC) with E6600 core 2 duo and work exactly like a real mac :P :)
