MacBook Pro - Which one should I get?
So Apple just got rid of the new MacBooks and they offer a wider selection of MacBook Pro's.
Well I really could use one for school (I'm in highschool) and just for a general computer that'll work and I can enjoy using. Right now I have OSx86 installed on my PC but I think its about time that I pay apple a little for there hard work on a spectacular operating system. So I want to get a MacBook Pro. What I am wondering is lets say you have an account in the bank that your uncle made before he died with $10,000 in it thats supposed to be used for School. How much of that would you spend on a MacBook Pro (Like how big of a screen would you suggest to get and how much ram,CPU...ect.) Just wondering your opinion to help guide me towards the MacBook Pro that would satisfy me =) Thank You. |
They did not get rid of the new macbooks. The old Macbook just got a speedbump and a new name, and with the exception of the SD card reader and fw are identical to the new 13" 'Macbook Pro'.

Hi,
Your choice of MBP should depend on your requirements. Personally, I wouldn't choose a 13" MBP because of the low screen resolution - I need 15" to be able to work properly. What features do you need, how much do you want to spend? Take the time, think about it and make the right decision. Have a lot of fun! |

Like Puttabong said - it all depends on what you need. I'd go for 13" MacBook Pro. Why ? I have always bought 15,4" laptops, and whatever you can say about them - mobility is not the word. If you think of taking it often with you - 13" will be more convenient, unless you need higher resolution.

I am really trying to choose over the 13" and 15" and one of the reasons is portability. I'm trying to figure that ratio over portability and size... I am really leaning toward a 15" but if its a hassle to carry (to big or weight) then I don't know if I'd really want it. Then again all the "higher powered" MacBook Pro's are 15". If anyone else has had experience with ether of the MacBook's then I'd love it if you could share your experience with portability. Thank you SO much with the feedback I've gotten so far =) |
Well I've never owned a MacBook, but I do own a 15" laptop and I have to say the screen size is PERFECT!! iWork, iLife ect.. just a breeze to work with on it.
If I were you I would go for the 15". ;) For me, it is very portable and can even fit in my OLD Dell laptop bag! But of course, it's totally up to you, thats just my opinion. They are all very powerful computers, but for things like Video editing, Photoshopping ect, I would recommend quite a very powerful MBP, but for just general use, the mid range would do IMO. I went to the apple store today and decided that I'm defiantly getting a 15" MacBook pro. Now I and I definitely want 4 GB of ram. So I'm pretty satisfied.

Why not buy the 13" and a large LCD? You can have the best of both worlds -- the greatest portability and more screen real estate than even the biggest MBP. 19" LCDs are down to about $110 nowadays and 22" are not much more. Of course, with the mini-Displayport on the MBP, you'll need to buy an adapter for most monitors that use DVI.

I'd much rather use it as just a laptop. I don't plan on hooking it up anywhere and using it on a larger screen.
So I finally talked to my dad about wanting a macbook pro. (before I talked to my mom and she was totally for it) and my dad said that my PC is completely fine and I can do everything on it that I need for schoolwork. So I'm in the middle of trying to find a way to convince him that OSX is better and more conviniant then windows. So any suggestions of arguments I can make towards that would be GREATLY appreciated. Am i the only one who likes 13" ? Using it with external monitor, like TechSgtChen suggested. I just love the idea of taking with me the computer on which i work at home. Just unplug, and put into backpack ;) Make Your dad work on a Mac for a while. If he doesn't see any advantages - i dont think any arguments would convince him :) And if he's a Mac hater, you might have a hard time there...

So he completely hates macs for no reason...I'm kinda thinking of installing a virus on his computer with a fun little .bat file.
I've helped him get Illegal window copies and keys to activate it all his life without asking for anything in return (not that he even asked) now I think I might show him what his computer would be like if I never helped him reinstall windows after getting a virus =) I probably won't do that because thats really ----ed up and over reacting but it sounds like such a good idea at the moment. |
Just tell him that your current computer is starting to become obsolete for the tasks you need it to do. Tell him that with a Mac (if he isn't tech savvy this works like a charm) you can run both Mac OS X and Windows "PC" things which is exactly what you need for school at the moment. Something along those lines.

I think action is better than words. Stick your dad on a mac for a week or so and make him go back to PC. If that doesn't convince him, sick a virus on the PC, not a harmful one though :D
I would say 13" is probably better for an average student. You get the mobility and all the power you need for school work. But if your going into media design and video editing, get the 15" for the power. Besides, MacBook Pros are really nicely designed the 15" isn't that much heavier and hasslesome than the 13". |
The graphix card is better in the 15" though. In my PC at the moment I have a NVIDIA 9500GT with 512MB ram. I think I'd feel disappointed if I downgraded that much. I think I'd like the 15" with the NVIDIA 9400M + 9600M GT with 512 MB.

Hope you'll find the way to convince your dad. Which one to buy, as the guys already said, it all depends on your demands; if you don't have really high demands go for a cheaper one.
Who mentioned 13.3" MacBooks, ah Taisto, yes. Well i had two white macbooks, 1.8ghz and 2.16Ghz (model 2007). Sold older one and bought myself a bit better one. Then sold it too, no particular reason though. Actually the reason was i spend all the time working on a desktop machine so no real need for a laptop. But as i just can't help myself having one i got a sony vaio, but again mainly for my wife, to play age of empires, zoo tycoon and now Sims 3 (heheh i hate all of these 3 ;-) Now about mobility, 17" vaio, not much of mobility here. This laptop is big, i mean not that heavy but again not that mobile to take it with you to bed for example and use it with ease. When i had 13.3" macbook, i used to take it with me to bed, read mails, surf, always in my arms. It was so easy using that laptop. I said to my self, several times while using it, how great and compact it is. Just a perfect dimension, for regular computer usage of course. So i just loved it. 15.4" should be also fine but definitely nothing above it as you'll have it always on the desk or on the table. Not much of mobility then. |
