SL OSInstall.mpkg method results in permissions troubles?
I installed SnowLeo from Leopard using OSInstall.mpkg method just fine but I'm unsure if the installation is right.
The installation completed successfully but: - I got a few errors in the installation log, about not being able to run some chrooted commands, not sure if those are expected or important. - Extensions.mkext never gets created when booting even after many -f reboots. - It seems I got no package or permissions database because I cant fix them using Disk Utility?. Anyone experienced this? The partition was erase before installation and its "Owner's enabled" before installing SL and permissions seem to be right (i.e. /S/L/E owned by root:wheel) but I think something is not right with this installation. |
Same thing here. No mkext, no permissions repair. It doesn't error, it just says complete after less than a second. If i could fix those and get my dsdt to compile i'd have a near vanilla install.

Install Snow Leopard using that method, then install Snow Leopard within Snow leopard using the OSinstall
|
Using the disc/dmg itself and not the mpkg?
|
No, using OSInstall.mpkg

That's what i thought you meant. I tried that, but when i try installing SL from within SL, my SL drive doesn't show up to install on. All i see is my TM, Windows, and Leo partitions, so i thought maybe i misunderstood you. You're directions seem pretty straightforward, so what is it I'm screwing up here?

Intall over the first installation of Snow Leopard?
|
Not over, but Within. Open the installer in snow leopard and install on another partition or HDD.
|
Just installed SL on my third machine and I agree with x986123.
If you have Leo then install SL from Leo. When you boot into this SL, then install SL onto another drive/partition. The last SL install will result in a very 'clean' SL install. Easiest, simplest and trouble free install. |
holy crap another one? ok i'll give it a go. I'll probably actually install over my leopard partition, then install back over my existing SL partition just to get it back to the bigger partition. You guys foresee any issues doing that? Also, do i need to go through the SL guide steps again when i do that? Reinstall chameleon, etc.?
|
Yes, install Chameleon, kexts everytime. Repair permissions too. Everything should go smooth.
|
Ah ok. Maybe I'll just clone it over the last time then :)
|
Yes, but you still need 2 install chameleon after cloning
It will fail, but dont let that bother you. Just after installing apply the Snow Leo patch to Chameleon. |
Yeah the RC3 boot file. That's what i did the first time. Was the first time it booted right :) Cool. Installing back to my Leo partition now. Btw, I'm super jealous of your rig, man. Nice.

Thanks! I used to own the q6600, great Processor.

I'll have to try this but I'm reluctant to go through the process. :P So far everything seems stable, but I have the same issue with Disk Utility so soon I'll have to create another partition and give this a shot.
Thanks for the posts! :D |
No problem!

to fix disk utility issue, just reinstall BSD.mpkg from within SL
