[GUIDE] Retail MSI X58 Platinum SLI + Pictures 64 BIT

1 Attachment(s)
Hello, I got a request by email to show those people with MSI x58 motherboards.
http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/4914/81547085.jpg

I have the Core i7 920, but the whole i7 range should work.

First off, I would recommend an install of Leopard 10.5.7 or 10.5.8 (iPC works best)
  • Once you have it basically installed, you should get the Snow Leopard DVD or DMG.
  • Mount the DMG/Disk and type this into terminal:

Code:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder

  • Go to /System/Installation/Packages.
  • Find and run OSInstall.mpkg.
  • Install it on a separate partition or hard drive.
  • If you installed it and received an error, it's ok. (To avoid error, just restore the DMG to another partition or a USB stick, and mount from there.)

Next, install Chameleon RC3 onto the "SnowHDD" or whatever you called it.
You should get an Extra/Extensions folder on the main root of you Snow Hard Drive. Copy the Kext's there.

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/997...90914at345.png

Find the Kexts you need, which are listed here:
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/229...90914at335.png

Kexts can be found HERE!

Alternatively, I uploaded my kext pack, HERE.

The kext are:

Code:

FakeSMC.kext (v2 at Netkas' site.)
PlatformUUID.kext
IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext
Jmircon.kext
OpenHaltRestart.kext
NullCPUPM (I see no effect, Just increases boot time by 10 seconds... REMOVE IT.)

Get EFI strings (best results) for your Graphics Card.

The Ethernet should be working out of the box! (for x58 platinum SLI) If not, get the Realtekr1000.kext from that site listed above!

Create a DSDT.aml file and put it in your root! http://pcwizcomputer.com/index.php?o...=150&Itemid=48

Change your Main Hard drive to the snow leopard one in the BIOS. Boot into Snow, and boot with -v. If this fails, boot with the -x32 and -v.

As soon as you get in, it might fail and you might get a Kernel Panic. DON'T PANIC! Log on as FAST as you can, and either run Kext Utility, or run the BSD.pkg from the /System/Installation/Packages. After its done, reboot, and use Disk Utility. If you choose, Kext Utility, go as FAST as you can, and drop S/L/E into the Kext Utility icon and let it finish. It might panic, but after reboot, run it on E/E and reboot. No more panics!

Thank you for reading!

After having a bit of trouble initially from having the dmg on the same partition as the active running Leopard install I'm stuck after it installed successfully. I installed Chameleon and am now not able to get that install to successfully boot.

When running -x32 -v I notice a few lines of interest:

Error - kext net.osrom.kext.Disabler declares com.apple.kernel dependencies. Only com.apple.kpi.* dependencies are supported for 64-bit kexts.
Can't load kext net.osrom.kext.Disabler - failed to resolve library dependencies.
Kext net.osrom.kext.Disabler failed to load (0xdc00800e).
kxld[com.apple.driver.decrypt]: The Mach-0 file is malformed: Invalid magic numbeR: 0xfeedface.

and then later on the last line, at which it freezes, is:
JMicronATA

When running -v I notice the same lines, and it ends here:

netkas presents fakesmc, a kext which emulates smc device
in6_ifattach_linklocal: nd6_prelist_add failed 12
in6_ifattach: lo0 failed to attach a linklocal address.

christopherl 09-15-2009 04:00 AM

Just tried with -x32 -v busratio=20 cpus=1 and I received this:

JMicronATA: JMB363 (CMD 0xcc00, CTR 0xc880, IRQ 17, BM 0xc400)
panic(cpu0 called 0xffffff80002cbf74): Kernel trap at 0xffffff7f80776ae1, type 14=page fault, registers:

x986123 09-15-2009 04:15 AM

Hmm. What are the BIOS settings? DO you have the latest BIOS? Did you recieve that last panic in snow leopard or during boot?

In snow, you do not need Busratio=20 or CPUS=1 with a DSDT Patch

christopherl 09-15-2009 04:17 AM

Received all of those during boot, the last was trying with -x.

BIOS settings are: HPET enabled, AHCI, Bit Execute disabled, Hyperthreading Enabled

christopherl 09-15-2009 04:30 AM

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/5805/img0040p.jpg

x986123 09-15-2009 04:39 AM

I have bit execute enabled, try that? BTW, do you have the Platinum Pro, Platinumx58 or Platinum SLI?

christopherl 09-15-2009 04:43 AM

Fantastic news! I just tried removing the JMicronATA kext and I'm able to boot into Snow Leopard, which is where I'm writing this post from. Things are running a bit slow, but I think that's because I haven't configured the graphics card (9800 GTX+) yet. Well, this is a great start, at least!

christopherl 09-15-2009 05:22 AM

Latest update:

After figuring out how to use OSX86Tools to update the EFI strings for 9800 GTX+, I checked the Hardware Overview and noticed this:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro2,1
Processor Speed: 2.71 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 8 MB
Memory: 6 GB
Bus Speed: 533 MHz

I'm running the i7 920, so that information seems like it's completely wrong. Am I missing something, or did that get screwed up somehow?

x986123 09-15-2009 06:09 AM

Its all right... Whats wrong?

christopherl 09-15-2009 07:39 PM

Ah, just the speed is off. Things seem to be running great now, better than ever, thanks so much for the guide!

How were you able to get your audio up and running?

x986123 09-15-2009 11:48 PM

I am using the XMOD external USB sound.

gapple 09-20-2009 01:35 PM

Sleep Working?

Does Sleep work on your board?

Everything else that I have tested works so far except sleep and mic/line in on sound (using voodooHDA.kext). I used a different install method using a retail install and Digital Dreamer's guide for Gigabyte:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/ind...owtopic=185097

Thanks!

x986123 09-20-2009 06:55 PM

Sleep shuts down my computer, do you have shutdown working though? Mine just reboots. Can you please send me your VoodooHDA and whatever you used to get integrated sound working?

gapple 09-20-2009 11:56 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Shutdown works fine on my board. If your board is rebooting after shutdown then you need to change your "wake up events by" power settings in your bios from "Bios" to "OS" or fix the bios wake up event that is causing it to wake up on its own.

My sleep powers down USB and drives but does nothing else. Might be my video card or DSDT.

Attached is the voodoohda kext. Seems that 5.1 is not working nor is mic/line in on my board. Audio is broadcast the same on all channels rather than in surround mode after testing a movie trailer I have in surround. DSDT mods might be necessary to get this working past stereo.

Report back if you make any progress.

x986123 09-21-2009 02:25 AM

Thanks for the the Voodoo kext! Works great!

gapple 09-21-2009 03:14 AM

Does Mic or Line in work? How about 5.1 and 7.1 channels? Let me know if it is different for you since I only get 2 channels..

Thanks.

mrlampshade 09-27-2009 11:32 PM

x986123, how did you make SL recogniz your Corei7? I successfully installed 10.6.1 on MSI X58, everything is fine, except my CPU is recognized as an unknown 4-core cpu...
Thanks,
-lampshade

x986123 09-27-2009 11:43 PM

It is recognizing your CPU, you just need to mod one file...

Go to /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AboutThisMac.strings

Quote:

"ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT" = "2.67 GHz Intel Core i7";

mrlampshade 09-28-2009 11:34 AM

Thanks for the lightspeed hint, dude. I'm still trying to improve audio and then we can consider it done. It's a long learning process. One step at a time ;)

Vetters 09-29-2009 05:26 AM

Hey guys,
I've been following the thread and had a quick question. I have a x58 MSI board and have everything working on it besides sleep. I've noticed that like myself, others have reported that when they go into sleep everything just completely shuts down. Has anybody found a solution for this? I appreciate you help.

Thanks
Vetters

x986123 09-29-2009 06:52 AM

I found it, In the BIOS, set the sleep to S3 instead of S1. Wake from sleep by pressing the POWER button.

madclown 10-01-2009 02:38 PM

hey guys! Do you know if this tutorial works for MSI x58 PRO-E board as well? Or are they maybe too different?

x986123 10-01-2009 11:51 PM

I don't know, you can try. Should work though. I am using *Generic* drivers. They are not made for the MSI x58 Platinum specificly, so they should work on yours too.

jacoweb 10-02-2009 10:24 AM

I selected the Voodoo kernel, with ACPI fix, 10.5.5 Seatbelt fix, Realtekr1000, and Jmicron & ICH9/10 chipset

Graphic card = EFI String, Sound is VoodooHDA

yanksrule421 10-04-2009 04:17 AM

what do you mean by efi string
thx for all your help

x986123 10-04-2009 09:06 AM

Search for them on google, theres an app called EFI Strings too.

I need your help....

Hello!
My english is not good, I'm not american.

I have new computer, is similar to yours, but I have a problem.

I installed OSx86, when installing iATKOS v7 use this busratio=20 cpus=1 -v and the installer will start, but after reboot
the system is loaded, but no progress...

Computer caracteristics:
  • i7 920 2.6
  • MSI X58 PLATINUM
  • ATI 4870 1g
  • 6 gb ddr3

This is the CUSTOM:

- Kernel --> Voodoo 9.7.0 o vanilla
- SMBIOS' for x86 --> iMac
- ACPI --> X86 ACPI
- Drivers --> VGA --> ATI --> ATI HD
- Drivers --> system --> sata/ide --> AHCI
- Drivers –> Network –> wired –> Realtek –> RTL8201

I need one idea...

hys17 10-15-2009 12:45 AM

Same MainBoard,CPU.but haven't got SLEEP fixed

Hi,thank you so much for your thread which truly helped me a lot.

So far I got most things working, except the SLEEP. I placed the kext as the same as you did (with sleepenabler.kext). But no matter how I change the BIOS settings, when I click SLEEP,it just totally shuts down.

So if you could share your BIOS setting specifically, I'd really appreciate.

Also, how to test if the OpenCL is working? Because I install EFI strings for my GPU, but sometimes it still slows.

Thank you very much

hys17 10-15-2009 03:55 AM

Just updated the boot loader to PC EFI v10.4. SLEEP is perfect now.

Thanks any way.If you could answer the other question, I'd so appreciate.

x986123 10-15-2009 04:17 AM

For sleep, change the mode to S3 and change the controller for sleep to OS not bios.

Btw, did you copy my sig!? =P

Busted:-/

As my last post, I fixed the sleep thing by using the newest boot loader.

But how do I test the OpenCL? Because sometimes the graphic slows and I got the EFI strings working.

Thank you very much

Search "OpenCL Galaxy" in google.

Help

I have successfully installed Snow Leopard but it won't let me boot in to normal mode. I can boot into safe mode, but when I try to do anything with the system I get the infamous "You must restart" in like 50 languages. I haven't ever be able to successfully boot iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5 into normal mode, just safe mode...:'( Any ideas on fixing either of these problems?

Specs:
MSI x58 Platinium SLI
Core i7 920
1TB WD HD SATA
80 GB Samsung HD SATA
CD-RW/DVD-DL-RW Lighscribe IDE
nVidia GeForce GTS 250 1GB

x986123 10-18-2009 10:00 AM

I dont think 10.5.5 is supported. Atleast 10.5.6 or .7

hys17 10-19-2009 01:05 AM

x986123,could you answer my last posted question?(about OpenCL test error) Thank you.

x986123 10-19-2009 03:07 AM

I don't know, i don't get that, sorry! Plus this is a windows test... since it has the .exe error. So it isn't your PC.

windows test?
No,I ran that on SL absolutely.Used the Guildline within the package that you suggested and typed the command in Terminal.

Yours is different?

x986123 10-19-2009 06:17 AM

No, no! this test is emulated apparently since you received the file ending with .exe. don't worry!

Hey I have Msi x58 platinium sli board with a core 17 920 and I tired to install both iatkos 7 and ipc 10.6 and they both do the same thing.

I put the cd in

computer comes on it says press f8 for options. I do so then type -v so I can see whats happening. the mach kernals go and it when it goes to long the darwin/x86 bootloader the thing immediatly restarts the computer and then I'm back to where I started.

I updated my bios.

I tried fidgeting with settings in the bios.

I tired the retail install approach from the beginning. that was no luck.

Any idea's would be greatly appreciated

After f8, type busratio=20 cpus=1 for load iAtkos 7 or iPc 10.6

Samuroth1349 11-03-2009 03:22 AM

ok after -v -x -f busratio=20 cpu=1 failed with Iatkos 7 I tried with ipc and it worked....so I don't know why the heck it did but it did...now to install if I can
