tell me how to find out who released it and i can post, all i know is it works and boots a bit quicker, finder seems smoother too

Firewalk 03-31-2008 06:26 AM

how do you apply these..

Firewalk

mrburns05 03-31-2008 06:30 AM

to apply, replace system.kext in /System/Library/Extensions

repair permissions:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext
sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext

replace mach_kernel with new one in / (rename to mach_kernel if its not already)- you may need onyx to show hidden files.
mach kernal goes in /

repair permissions

sudo chown -R root:wheel /mach_kernel
sudo chmod -R 755 /mach_kernel

reboot with -v -f

Firewalk 03-31-2008 06:32 AM

hi there mrburns05, thanks for the help. do you know if this is likley to brake my system?.

Firewalk

mrburns05 03-31-2008 06:39 AM

its possible, backup your mach_kernel and System.kext before hand, if it brakes replace em again

in windows you can use macdrive

in another tiger or leo - easy as 123 - if you have another install to use

Firewalk 03-31-2008 06:48 AM

Thank You i have installed and all seems ok.. will test . do you know what improements these have?.

WinLinMac01 03-31-2008 07:05 AM

THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU...!!! GOING TO TRY THESE NOW! THANK YOU SO MUCH. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO STOP MYSELF FROM SAYING THANK YOU. Oh wait...there...=)
This is an amazing update for us. I've been longing for this since the last Apple Update came out. Now there shouldn't be any problems with Time Machine. - Cheers

Let's have a toast in the Lounge section. :D

WinLinMac01 03-31-2008 07:16 AM

mrburns05, you're a life-saver. ;-)

mrburns05 03-31-2008 07:28 AM

Im not sure of the improvements actually, i just like having all the latest, so i figured ill be the guinea pig here...The whole system seems a bit smoother and more responsive .

your welcome ! :-)

thank the maker- if any of us ever figure that out

agrafuese 03-31-2008 07:36 AM

odd that netkas isn't connected to this one. maybe it's TOH then... hmm, an anonymous contributor :) anyhow, thanks for this mrburns05. trying out a retail install tonight, so this will come in handy later :)

mrburns05 03-31-2008 07:38 AM

iasked in the irc, no one seemed to really know much about it,

one suggested "modbin"

never heard of him/her/them before

WinLinMac01 03-31-2008 08:13 AM

yep, it's ToH alright. =)) amazing

jaywhy 03-31-2008 08:17 AM

Is this 64bit kernel?
I don't know improvement. How about this kernel?

WinLinMac01 03-31-2008 08:22 AM

No its not, soley x86-32 bit.

;-)

CyCLoBoT 03-31-2008 09:03 AM

Just tried this right now and noticed that in System Profiler, its showing "Total Number Of Cores: 1".

I have AMD X2 processor. Any way to fix this?

Not sure if its fixable, both cores are still running though, minw does the same

mrburns05 03-31-2008 09:43 AM

see here, shows both cores doing separate tasking

<img src="http://mrburns05.com/images/cpu.png" />

CyCLoBoT 03-31-2008 09:58 AM

Mine shows two cores as well. But it just looks better when it shows 2.

bhast2 03-31-2008 02:13 PM

works great
thanks

WinLinMac01 03-31-2008 03:12 PM

Anybody care to setup a tutorial in how to install the latest kernel?

Do any of you think this is one of Zephyroth's surprises since its probably not ToH who wrote the modified kernel after all?

What do you all think? :D

:D :D :D ;-)

YamatoHD 03-31-2008 03:24 PM

Zephiroth, definately!
Who else can we trust? Zephiroth, keep up the good work!

DoiX 03-31-2008 03:35 PM

winlinmac use kernel installer (made by pcwiz) search insanelymac, sorry but i don't have time to give you a direct link, bye

bhast2 03-31-2008 03:52 PM

i don't think it was Zephiroth that made this or he would have said something somewhere on the forum

Puttabong 03-31-2008 04:00 PM

Good News, thanks to whoever released this :)

WinLinMac01, rename mach_922 to mach_kernel and use pcwiz's kernel installer, as suggested by DoiX:

http://mac.kbot.de/pcwiz-mac-osx86-kernel-installer/

bhast2 03-31-2008 04:02 PM

now all we need is the time machine update to work on our systems

WinLinMac01 03-31-2008 04:07 PM

Well, he did say something about "surprises." You never know, it can be Apple who released too you know (just kidding) =) Thank you whoever did this. And thank you to DoiX and Puttabong that have eased my kernel installation process. Greatly, appreciated.

Puttabong 03-31-2008 04:09 PM

@WinLinMac01, I believe the Pcwiz kernel installer is only for the kernel (mach_kernel) itself.

To apply the needed System.kext as well, follow this & backup your files before you start:

Quote:

[cite] mrburns05:[/cite]to apply, replace system.kext in /System/Library/Extensions

repair permissions:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext
sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext

replace mach_kernel with new one in / (rename to mach_kernel if its not already)- you may need onyx to show hidden files.
mach kernal goes in /

repair permissions

sudo chown -R root:wheel /mach_kernel
sudo chmod -R 755 /mach_kernel

reboot with -v -f

bhast2 03-31-2008 04:15 PM

for the system.kext i just used kext helper
and for the mach kernel i followed the steps above in my terminal and it worked great

will sleep work now???

Puttabong 03-31-2008 04:36 PM

Thanks again for the great news mrburns05, I wrote an article at Infinite Mac. :)

monsieur.d 03-31-2008 05:31 PM

Hi Mrburns05.

What is that program you use that shows CPU usage graphs in the menu bar with a translucent black background?

Thanks.

Monsieur D.

bhast2 03-31-2008 05:37 PM

its called istat you can get it here
http://www.islayer.com/

minibuu 03-31-2008 05:51 PM

Okay, so if you install this should you still avoid the Time Machine update?

bhast2 03-31-2008 05:58 PM

i would avoid it

Voyn1x 03-31-2008 06:07 PM

Quote:

[cite] bhast2:[/cite]i would avoid it
I wouldn't, the only reason we had to avoid the Time Machine update was because of the system.kext and 9.2.2 kernel it installed.

Now we have these it should be safe, just make sure you replace the kernel and system.kext AFTER you install the update – also make sure you run Marvins before you restart, otherwise your system won't boot!

after you do it let us know if it works

creative_ 03-31-2008 07:01 PM

installed the new kernel and system.kext...it optimized my system a lot

--> -7sec to boot
--> programs running smoother

minibuu 03-31-2008 07:23 PM

I am having trouble with the update/replace process. When I run the updater it wont install the updates right away. What it does is downloads then tell me to restart, and then installs the updates while it restarts preventing me from replacing anything. How are you guys doing it so that you can update and replace?

CyCLoBoT 03-31-2008 07:28 PM

I usually download the updates from Apple's site. Then when you install it normally, it will ask you to restart after installation and then you can replace whatever you want before pressing the Restart button.

cool thanks

DoiX 03-31-2008 10:12 PM

ehe :) the kernel isn't working with my system, it causes kernel panic, too bad :(

agrafuese 03-31-2008 10:20 PM

try repairing permissions on it if you can (from spare installation or install DVD). sometimes, for whatever reason, the terminal manual permissions commands don't get deep inside the file enough, and leave certain contents untouched. really frustrating, actually. hope that helps :\

DoiX 03-31-2008 10:46 PM

i tried that... tried even pcwiz's kernel installer, its just not working :|

bhast2 03-31-2008 11:28 PM

do not install the time machine update because even if you replace these files it still doesn't work
it will boot up
i see my desktop and than it goes blue screen than back to desktop than blue screen
back and forth i had to do a bunch of repairs to get this working again thank god i have leopard on another drive

gipo 03-31-2008 11:56 PM

upgrade... done. All seems to be ok... only thing, before mach_kernel was invisible now is visible... how to hidden it again?

agrafuese 03-31-2008 11:59 PM

there's a thread here on that gipo. do a search.

mindlessmissy 03-31-2008 11:59 PM

Why Do i have this feeling that this is Bogus... Isn't the system version supposed to read something like 9C7010 instead of 9C31 if the kernel and system is indeed 9.2.2 ???

Xxp/TuX 04-01-2008 12:01 AM

Does support processors with sse2 instructions?.Anyone can confirm this?
