Possible New Style Of Distro?
Ok i think the days of the traditional distro are over (well they are for me at least). Since the new kernel for the majority of users the os no longer need to run patched this and that. So what I propose is an DMG of a usb drive eg pendrive that utilises either chameleon 1.0.12 (not officially released) or boot 132 with all the possible combinations of kexts (drivers on). With a util that can be launched from the OSX utillites menu or used in terminal (comeon PCWiz I know your good at this stuff). That then installs your choosen kexts. So basically you download a DMG restore to pendrive boot of that which will boot the dvd and have your chipset kext on do the standard retail install. Then use the utility before quitting installer to add kernel, chipset and maybe ethernet drivers reboot, then you can download the rest of kexts. Im putting this idea out as less messing about also I dont think I have the time to do this properly. Plus havnt got the beta of chameleon lol. Plus that means we could all go and buy OSX knowing we can get it on with just a small dmg download also this could be done in other image formats so it can be restored in windowz.

so let me work out if i understand what you are saying, your saying this way we can all buy retail OS X and then download this .dmg which will open at bootup and it will be a list of all the kexts and other things needed to get it working on a HackMac and then we just select which kexts we want and it will install these onto the retail copy of OS X we have installed?

Its an interesting concept. I was toying with another that basically set up the munky-modified boot-132 method to run retail on any computer... either intel or AMD OR mac... I use this right now with a 500GB external HD that I used a munky-modified boot-132 8GB flash drive that I restored my retail 10.5.0 DVD to and installed everything (and updated natively as well) so I can run either my desktop hackintosh OR my macbook from.
I just wish there was a way to employ this into an image file and create an easy installer for... I'm trying though... Once I get that done I'm thinking of finding someone with a distro that is close to retail (it doesn't even have to be an up to date one either as software update will work natively with it) and work to get it to install everything to the destination drive... Now the customizing is going to be hard for this... when people choose their kexts, it would place them inside the EFI partition to be used with the munky-modified boot-132 bootloader and not interfere with the retail(ish) install... vanilla kernels could still be installed to the system because the voodoo kernel would be run from the same EFI partition as the other chosen kexts would be... I like your idea of a pen-drive image... I wonder if this would have any place within your idea...? |
Retail Install
Sounds pretty cool to me. No more people having problems due to a bad burn & they can actually say they purchased the OS.
I am about to do a retail install sometime after Christmas. I am wanting to do this mostly to get my hands dirty and to get a better understanding of what and why certain things need to be patched. Dies spelled out a method for me to do a retail install a while back and I have been wanting to do it for a while now. How many of you guys are running a retail install... Other than those smart few who rolled their own distro. |

I had the same idea, you just need to find a gui way to load the kernel from the usb. Another bonus is that the images are legal, so no more torrents ;)

you wouldnt need a gui for the kernel jusat call it what you like and boot with that name eg voodoo -v -f
