voodoo kernel 4GB ram - is this a problem?
 

hi one quick question i am running 10.5.6 ipc universal install on a amd 6000+ sb600 chipset machine... currently with 2GB 667mhz ddr2 ram... i want to upgrade to 4GB 800mhz... will this be a problem for the 9.5.0 voodoo kernel? will only 3Gb be adressed or is 64bit supported?

i would also like to upgrade to 10.5.8 but too scared atm since everything is runnin so smoothly

from what i've read, osx can support 4 gigs in 32bit mode. there are some limitations (like it not being quite as good as 64 bit mode, but close)

i imagine you are going to need to install 10.6 for 64 bit mode, assuming your system supports it

Well OS X supports virtual adressing for the effective use of more memory then 3.* GB, but this does not work on AMD, Netburst (Intel P4, etc) by default - just on Intel-Core CPUs etc (those who are able to run Vanilla Kernel).

The Voodoo based Kernels out there support to force activate this feature using the "-force64" bootflag, but this is still often unstable...

You might update to latest 9.8.0 Voodoo Kernel by Andyvand: :)

thank you for your quick answers... atm it is no big deal for me if only 3GB will be supported as long as it still will boot up... just want to be able to boot win7 64bit on the same machine...

i remember i had to patch ddr2 667mhz when i installed iPC... will i need another smbios kext for ddr2 800mhz?

I would not use any kext to fix the SMBIOS values. You can upgrade your Bootlaoder and inject those values via smbios.plist :)

ok i will look into it as soon as i have a second sata drive where i can backup the whole system before i try this :D
