Still waiting for root device
I have searched for this, and have found some threads regarding my chipset etc, but none of the solutions provided worked.
I finally got a release burned to a dvd (iDeneb 10.5.6) with AMD support and went to go install. It booted up into darwin, and then I got to the apple screen. It loaded for a few seconds, and then a red stop sign appeared over the apple. I then booted with -v and noticed that there was a "still waiting for root device" error. I only have one HDD, a 500GB SATA split into 3 partitions. My optical drive is set as slave (jumper settings for master doesn't seem to want to be detected). Maybe that is the problem ? I don't see why though. System specs: Pi-AM2RS780G mobo (780g chipset)(SB700) HD 4830 Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 500GB samsung SATA I also tried adding SB700 kexts to a kalyway release I got, and I still received the error. Any help is appreciated. I would really like to get this installed. |
So I actually fixed this problem. I somehow got my dvd drive to be recognized as master after a ton of fiddling with it. Booted up and I installed. My SATA wasn't recognized so I found an old IDE and used that to install. Works I guess, there are some problems though.
The install just hangs on reboot. I tried a whole bunch of different install settings (ie, the AMD patch 1 & 2 and the hotfix), but I'm still stuck. Also, as I kept formatting and uninstalling last night, the time it took to install seemed to gradually go up. Eventually it said about an hour and 20 minutes to install. Seems messed up, as the install never finished and hung at about 25 minutes left. I left it on all night (feel asleep waiting). I will try again today, but I'm still lost on why it hangs on reboot. The first time it got stuck at "network connection refused" and it just sat there. I had to reboot. |

Also i recommend to install Voodoo Kernel 9.7.0. Try to get your Sata working, ALOT better then IDE. generally DONT BUY MOBOS FROM SAPPHIRE |

But I'm not sure if chemeleon installs itself along with the OS install ? Is that something separate I need to burn ? I know its the bootloader. Thats about all I know though. My install no longer exists though, as the install decided to stop midway and I can't get it to install anymore on the IDE. I did format to Mac Extended Journaled though. I just don't know how to get my SATA drive to detect. I downloaded the SB700 kexts and added them.... :/ |
Still need help with this problem. Never figured out what is wrong.......

this might help
set AHCI to active if you have it. it helps with the sata drive detection.
P-ATA drives would randomly work, very slow bootup and you'd need jmicron installer for it. using gigabyte GA-G31M-es2c, nearly as good as the es2l except for the lan card, but did a workaround and its working perfectly on 5.8. here's my specs: video: 9400 GT 1gig board: gigabyte ga-g31m-es2c ram: (2) 1gig kingston DDR2 drive(s): seagate sata 250gig partitioned into two (dual boot on mac leopard 10.5.8 and windows xp on 2nd partition) samsung 80gig sata (dump drive) P-ATA dvd writers (lite-on) SATA samsung dvd writer (no lightscribe capability), based on experience i've had for a while, the LG with lightscribe has a certain flaw on installation, more common than not it would fail on "installer integrity check before installation to drive", and it heats up beyond comfort. so far im still figuring out WHY OH WHY the gigabyte ga-g31m-es2l fails on the update installation. from 5.7 to 5.8, tho the es2c worked liked a snake with a charmer. things to consider on installation using iatkos v7 set kernel version 9.7.0 install ICHx fixes install jmicron fixes install chameleon v2 as bootloader install azalia audio if its available on your mobo. get a cup of coffee cuz it can take longer v^_^v |
Hm. Well I had tried AHCI before and then I was never able to boot into the disk. I will try it again I guess. Hopefully I can get my SATA to work.
