Super slow dvd drive

Hi all,

I have OSX 10.6.4 running. I have tried copying files from a SATA and IDE dvdrom to my hard drive and its extremely slow. It takes about 30 minutes or so to copy 4gbs over. Is this normal??? Is there any way to fix this?
