Use CD-ROM to boot on USB drive

Hello all,

I've a quite old laptop (vaio Z1-XMP) and I would like to install Leopard on an external usb drive before open the laptop and replace the drive.

But I cannot boot direcly on USB.

Is it possible to boot with the cdrom and ask to go to the USB drive ?
