Intel Nic gets lost in 10.5.8

Worked great to do software update from install of iATKOS v7, Then it just got lost when I rebooted a day later. Been messing around with all sorts of kext and searching interweb for answers. Using intel Pro 100S PCI nic. Onboard is BMC575x, but the thing never worked. Hardware for both are seen. Onboard is en0, intel is en2. Getting "cable not attached" errors.

Found many people who had same issues and did all sorts of edit to plist and such. I pulled the card to see if I had been using wrong kext or something. When I reseated it, the stupid thing works again on reboot.

ANYBODY have idea what is going on?
