how to every 32bit app run with AMD w/8GB RAM 64bit userland?

Hi, all

Just as titled, I would like to know if there is a way to run every 32bit app when running 64bit userland.

I recently added extra 4GB to my AMD PII 955 / ASUS M4A78T-E / 4GB making 8GB which is running 10.6.7 with nawcom legacy kernel 10.7. When I booted, it showe cpu halted and shut down. I find it is with memory from googling so when I used maxmem=4094, it booted but only 4G recognized. So there was no point adding 4GB!

So googled more to find ANV kernel which supports 32bit kernelt, 64bit userland which make my system to recognized 8GB BUT some of 32bit apps don't run.

For example, garageband, iMovie is not running. It shows "quit unexpectadly" error. also silverlight plug in for FireFox doesn't run either as it shows it won't run on 64bit. I need that to run netflix......
I have not tested other apps but those are the ones that I would like to use.

I see the signature from Akimoa, and Wastez showing they have 8GB so I assume they are using full 8GB.....are they?

Currently I am booting with arch=i386 maxmem=4094 with legacy kernel againonly because when I use arch=i386 -force64 with ANV kernel then above apps I mentioned to not run.

Is there a way to remedy this?

Thanks in advance.

I see you have

AnV cparm Boot Beta 3

Where do you get that? I only see the link for beta 2

changed kernel then it worked!

OK, I played with it and looking at akimoa's signature notice he was using nawcom's legacy kerenl 10.8 and so I decided to give a try even though I am running 10.6.7, ran the 10.8 pkg, selected support AMD 64bit option, reboot.....

it WORKS!

It seems ALL of my 32bit apps running including garageband and imovie.

Thanks.

By the way, if I choose to go 10.6.8, do I have to run those commands again?

Sometimes after system updates yes, read below...

I'm not using Nawcom's kernel, but I am patching my binaries. I would expect some updates may affect your install.

I have 2 SL installations one called "snow" 320gb in size, one called "repair" 40gb.

When I have run system update on my "snow" partition sometimes quicktime gets updated. Sometimes iphoto gets updated. When this happens it affects my running of garageband, idvd, iphoto, and quicktime.

I just repatch the binaries when this happens but it's only happened twice (once with iphoto update, then a couple weeks later with quicktime update.) on a side note, off topic a little, system update has replaced my kernel and replaced iousbfamily.kext with unusable versions on many occasions. so the "repair" partition has become a very handy tool for me and I suggest to anybody with expendable HD space to use "Carbon Copy Cloner" and clone their system down to a smaller (bootable) partition.

Yes I know you can use a thumb drive, and boot cds, and even distros to boot in, but IMHO it's nice to just have a working system right there when you need it. wtshtf

Thanks for your info.
I do have two partition for such instances. I have everyday use MAC on 32GB SSD and backup mac (for repair) on other partition on other HDD, and when I have a problem with first one, I boot to backup and do the repair. However I use restore feature in disk utility to clone, but is CCC better?

As far as update goes, I am good wih updates as far as iLife update and 10.6.7. I don't know updating 10.6.8 will help me or not, but thinking about it. I hear so many issues with 10.6.8 because of IOUSBfamily and IOPCIfamily also I hear 10.6.8 doesn't have HD5670 frmaebuffer so I have to use 10.6.7 kext to run my HD 5670 on 10.6.8. so I don't even know if it is worth the trouble updating to 10.6.8 while I feel I got it pretty good with what I have.

Currently I have
AMD PII X4 955 OCd 3.8
ASUS M4A78T-E
ATI HD 5670 1GB
DDR3 8GB (2GB X 4)
OS X 10.6.7
Nawcom 10.8 kernel
Chameleon 1455
