Well I downloaded the original kext from Realtek and it did not work, so I patched the kext by changing the Device ID to the Device ID of the internal RTL8187B that I have.

You can download it here : http://www.infinitemac.com/f57/official-patched-realtek-usb-rtl8187b-wifi-kext-release-t5472/

Toshiba Satellite A505-S6015

I just purchased this yesterday with my main goal to dual boot MacOX X. I have a 5-license copy of Mac OS X that I plan to use to install.

I sort of decided to buy then dive into this and should have done my research first because i am not 100% sure that I will be able to install Mac OS X SL on it now based on what I am reading.

Here are the specs;

Code:
Processor Intel Core i5-430M Processor
Memory (RAM) 4GB
Memory Type DDR3
Memory Expandable to 8GB
Hard Drive Size 500GB
Hard Drive Type SATA
Optical Drive DVD SuperMulti drive with Labelflash supporting 11 formats
Display Size 16.0"
Display Type widescreen TruBrite TFT LCD display at 1366 x 768
Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Battery Type 6 cell (4400 mAh) Lithium Ion battery pack
Network Card Wi-Fi Wireless networking (802.11b/g/n)
Video Graphics Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD
Other ports HDMI
# of USB slots 4
Bluetooth Enabled No
Dimensions 15.1"W x 10.2"D x 1.44"/1.61"H
Weight 6.48lbs
Warranty 1 year
Extra Features Built-in harman/kardon stereo speakers
I thought I did my homework, I did not, now I realize that you have to know the EFI String, and resolutions to set before booting a "132" CD Image. :-)

Any ideas? Should I just return this notebook and get myself a used Macbook Pro?

What happens is when I boot with the (I believe it is Chameleon compiled into a .iso) I get to the point where the Snow Leopard disc is found properly but when I select it to continue, there is some text that scrolls on the screen and the laptop reboots. The text scrolls by so quickly that I don't really notice any errors.

I've got a very good *nix background and Mac OS background. Just wanted to try and save about $2k by NOT buying a Macbook Pro.

I ran CPUID-Z (I believe that is what it is called, and there was no further detail on the Intel graphics chipset.... odd I thought.

Some more searches pulled out that Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD = GMA 5700M HD ??

Well you need to get a little more spec info like who makes the WiFi card and what model, and also I suggest iAtkos v7 Leopard or a retail instal of Snow Leopard using the Empire EFI CD.

I tried Empire EFI CD and the laptop reboots when it gets ready to use my SL Retail DVD. The last messages that I see are:

Code:
efi_inject_get_devprop_string NULL trying stringdata
no SMBIOS replacement found.
Patched DMI Table
No DSDT replacement found. Leaving ACPI data as is
Starting Darwin x86_64
[laptop reboots]

No Hackintosh will be as reliable and easy to use as a true Macintosh. At best, it'll work as well as (or perhaps even better than, in some respects) a real Mac, but there will always be the potential for software upgrades to completely hose the system, and in most cases there's a steep learning curve to get it installed in the first place. You may get it 90% working without too much trouble, but then you'll have issues getting that final 10% (WiFi, optimum graphics, getting sleep working, etc.). Thus, if you've got the extra cash and want something that Just Works, buy the real Mac. If not, either abandon plans to run OS X or plan to spend many hours researching and debugging.

As to your specific system, it probably uses a recent enough Intel video chipset that you won't get optimum video performance -- it'll be missing QE/CI support, which means that some advanced games and video players won't work with it. AFAIK, this is true of the vast majority of current commodity laptops. My understanding is that Apple has switched to nVidia graphics on its recent models, so the current line of Intel graphics chipsets may never be fully supported. WiFi issues can be worked around via a USB WiFi dongle, so I wouldn't worry too much about them just yet.

If Empire EFI doesn't work, you could try a distribution, such as the iAtkos that 00010 suggests; however, iAtkos is a 10.5.x distribution. There's a 10.6.x distribution floating around under the name "Hazard," and I think there are one or two other 10.6.x distributions, but there are nowhere near the number of 10.6.x distributions that there were of 10.5.x distributions.
