Okay, now that I have acquired the Stage kernel I am going to replace the 9.2 kernel on my cloned installation. Now do I just use the installer you created or do I have to use any special tools, like OSX Tools or something similar? I use Kext helper allot, but I do not think is was intended to be used to replace the Mach Kernel...correct?

Anywho I am going to use the installer package on my main installation partition, back it up with carbon copy to a new drive and see if it will update using the instructions you provided me in your earlier response. Wish me luck...now if I can just figure out how to enable quartz on this damn X1650 I would be on easy street!

Thanks again for your help and patients!

***UPDATE***

Installed the Stage 9.4 Kernel without a hitch..now on to trying to upgrade this baby to 10.5.6...crossing fingers!

***UPDATE***

Install of 10.5.6 Update was successful without having to edit the startup script. I am currently downloading 10.5.7 update and will try to install that using the same instructions you provided...so far so good!

***UPDATE***

Downloaded 10.5.7 Update and the image verifies, but when I go to mount the .dmg file the system locks up? Odd, not sure why but I did try to install it several times and with the same result. Quite puzzled I am, but I did some research this morning and found out that this kernel panic is caused by my seatbelt kext that you mentioned in your tutorial. I need to do some more reading on how to reinstate the one I had before I updated to 10.5.6 and on how to restore my backed up extensions in safe mode. There is no real easy way to upgrade, but since I can not run this system with the vanilla kernel I am stuck doing it the hard way

Thanks again!

Oh and before I forget, would someone please give me some advice on a replacement video card for my system that is supported natively in leopard. I am tired of crashing my system with all these fixes out there that don't work or partially enable the card. Preferably an nVidia since those are the best supported. Make sure that you understand my system board only supports AGP and not PCIE.

Read about how to fix dmg mounting issue in the relating Sticky topic:
http://www.infinitemac.com/f5/update...lt-kext-t1992/

Maybe you can find some of the cards listet in the HCL (http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/in...HCL_10.5.6#AGP) for a good price on ebay...

Yep working on that now...I do believe I read about that before and thanks for the reminder. I replaced the seatbelt.kext file from my working 10.5.5 installation and plugged it into my backup that I am updating. Had to remove the atiinject.kext because it was hanging my system. Will let you know if it works.

Thanks again!

***UPDATE***

Well I replaced the seatbelt.kext and tried to mount the .dmg and the same thing happened...locked up with kernel panic right away. I tried to install the voodoo kernel 9.5 revision 1 and of course at boot up it panicked again because of the 9.5 kernel. I really don't know what seatbelt kext I should be using with the 9.4 kernel, I read somewhere that I was supposed to extract it from the 10.5.4 update package, but that sounds kind of fishy to me. Any ideas?

Curious - I am on 10.5.7 with 10.5.7 seatbelt.kext and Stage Kernel without any problems...

But anyway here is the 10.5.4 seatbelt.kext:

Thanks...I am still using the 10.5.5 seatbelt kext and updated to 10.5.6 without any major problems, but for some reason if I try to mount the 10.5.7 dmg I get the panic. Will try it again with the 10.5.4 seatbelt kext and see if that changes anything.

Danke Schoen!

That did the trick. Mounted the 10.5.7 dmg and I am updating now. Will let you know if it works.

Thanks again!

***UPDATE***

Updated to 10.5.7 !! Great work and thank you. The only issue I can see is that I lost the ability to change my video resolution. Guess I need to do some research on how to get that working again. Thanks again for all of your help.

Okay copied the modified video kexts from my 10.5.5 installation into my new 10.5.7 installation and bingo I now have full resolution capabilities. Guess the only thing left to do now is to browse for a new video card for this old bird and see if I can find one that is supported natively in 10.5.7, I do not plan on trying to "fix" this machine any further. I think she has gone as far as I can push her and surprisingly for an "older" box she runs pretty smooth....next comes Snow Leopard on my new machine.

Thanks so much for all your help and patients. I have learned more in the past two days about Mac than I have ever dreamed I would.

I do have one other quick question if I may. Ever since I upgraded to 10.5.7 my CPU rating is not listed in "about this mac" correctly. Is there a reason for this or better yet a fix?
When clicking on " hardware " in " about this mac " I get this message " There was an error while gathering this information. " In finder my CPU is rated " 2 x 0 MHz Unknown " ??

Any help would be appreciated..thanks so much.

Hi,

This will read out and correct the displayed CPU identifier:

Replacing this two files, will give you correct SystemProfiler Info on 10.5.7 & 10.5.8
