I'm not sure why this started but just recently my computer has locked up a few times. a light gray bar has come across the top 1/5 of the screen. It is quite interesting seeing as how I haven't really been doing anything when it came up. just surfing the web.

Please let me know if you have any idea whats going on. My specs are listed in my sig

Memory?

Despite the fact that your only surfing is there a possibility that something is pushing your memory usage past 3.5GB?

I had a freeze problem where when memory usage past 3.5GB it would freeze. This generally would happen during heavy usage however in two occasions I had just started up and was surfing and had it freeze up with screen artifacts.

If your not already using maxmem to limit memory on boot you might give it a try. I would try maxmem=2048 (2GB) to be safe and if it fixes the problem nudge it up until you start having problems again. I have had pretty good luck using maxmem=3584 (3.5GB) with no crashes since.

If you find that fixed your problem you can add it to your com.apple.boot.plist in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

Talking 4GB fix

I gave the fix a try and am pleased with the results. Im using all 4GB of memory and have drained all but a bit less than a 100mb and could not make my fig crash.

I have only been using it for a few days so I can't say yet if the fix is good or if it creates any new issues.

I've made a similar post over at the other thread but I'll state it here as well for simplicity sake. This "fix" works; it allows for more than 4GB of RAM... however, on my system with an nForce4 MCP61 chipset with a SATA DVD-RW. The DVD-RW does not respond anymore... until I replace the kext with the old one and go back to less than 4GB RAM. Since there are no IDE ports on my board so this "fix" is only good for systems like mine with external DVD drives.

Hope this helps.
