Mobility HD 3450..

Hey all.. I've asked everyone about this yet received no proper answer.. So I've come here baring the same question..

What is the story with the HD 3450 Mobility card? What specifically is causing it and other Mobility cards from not working? What makes them so diffrent from Intel onboard graphics? Or their PIC-E counterparts?

Has anyone managed to get full 1440x900 resolution from a Dell Studio 15 laptop with this Mobility Radeon HD 3450 card? Or a laptop of a similar specification? This is all I am looking for..

Have they given up on these cards? Is there no possible way to get them working? Really, I find no reason to have Leopard on my Dell laptop if there is no graphics support..

Hi MatthewRuddy,

Firstly, welcome to InfiniteMac board, enjoy your stay here! Secondly, welcome to the ati mobility hd 34xx serie owners club ;-) I am also a member, a premium one.. without a working CI/QE..

A guy over at insanelymac made me laugh once when i read his post, to tears.. he said 'I would kill for a working solution', hehe, i bare with him.

Well, there is not still a working solution for this particular ati serie. I have tried numerous options without any success and i gave up at the end, in spite of laptop is a killer, i've removed osx as its really no fun without CI/QE. These cards from 34xx serie require new ati framework. We all hope that support for it will come soon (i personally hope to have it in 10.6 snow leopard, i sincerely hope). A team of developers over at insanelymac started developing new framework. Still no final solution but guys are working hard trying to make it work so we will see. Many other cards had no support as well and we just waited for it. I hope it will be the same case with this particular serie.

Regards!

Thanks for the warm welcome

Yes, I do believe people are at work on these cards, in one specific thread over on InsanelyMac, although the lack of posting by them leads me to believe they too have given up

There's a Radeon HD thread in insanelymac, take a look at there sometimes for new drivers. I used the the package for my Radeon HD2600XT (no mobility) and they're working great, up ti 2048x1536, Dual-Monitor, TV-Out. Theres also a #radeonhd channel on irc.osx86.hu

The Radeon HD3450 and the Mobility HD3450 both are using the RV620 GPUs. Unfortunelately there aren't drivers for the normal HD3450, too...

2 Opteron systems: OSx86 10.5.8, Andy's 9.8.0 kernel, Asus A8N-SLI Premium, Opteron 185 o'clocked @ 2 x 2,95 GHz (2nd system 2.6 GHz), ATI Radeon HD2600XT 256MB Dual-Monitor 2x HP L2035, 4 GB RAM, Griffin FireWave as main audio device, Marvell + nForce LAN, Asus U3S6 USB3/SATA6 card, 5,5 TB harddisk, Firewire 800 card, Apple Remote + eHome IR receiver, 2x Wacom serial graphics tablet, Canon Pixma iP4700, Logitech Internet Navigator wireless keyboard/mouse combination.

My Audio stuff: M-Audio Transit USB (default audio), M-Audio ProFire 610, M-Audio ProFire Lightbridge (34 channels) using Creamware A16 ADAT converter MIDI: M-Audio Midiman 4x MIDI interfaceBehringer Audio Mixers: Xenyx 1002, Xenyx 1002FX, Xenyx 1202FX, Eurorack UB1002FX, Eurorack MX1804FX, Eurorack MX262A • FX devices: Lexicon MPX100 DSP, Behringer DSP-1000 Virtualizer, Behringer MiniFEX 800 DSP, Behringer Multicom Pro MDX4400 compressor RETRO: MSSIAH midi/sequencer/synthesizer cardridge for the C64 (Dual-SID), Steinberg M.S.I. So theoretically if they can get the PCI-E Radeon HD3450 to work, the same kext should also apply to the Mobility HD3450 card?

Theoretically maybe, practically no as there is difference between desktop and mobility GPU. Still no adequate kext for it. In windows for example, i use desktop driver for hd3450 for my mobility hd3450 as it is pretty much obsolete. But there is ati modder which can modify desktop driver for use on mobility chips, works pretty nice. For Mac we dont even have a proper desktop driver. Some guys reported partial or full success with desktop hd3450 with modified kexts. No matter if its a native or a hacked one as long as it works, i wouldnt mind one :-) but still nothing for mobility 34xx. I am sure it will appear, sooner or later, for both desktop and mobility cards. (or i am selling my laptop ;-)

No need to open another thread for me.

I'm in the same position you guys are in but I have a Mobillity HD3870x2. It is quite frustrating that there is support for HD3870x2 (no mobility) but none for mine. Makes it even worse by knowing that in Windows I can use Mobility moder easily on a desktop card and BAM! working driver for mobility... So ironic that it works on Windows so easily and not on Mac. I would give anything to have a Mobility moder that would work just as easily on my iDeneb...

Everything else works, but audio and graphics. Seriously, there is no point if you are stuck with a crappy res. I could live without QE CI and no sound (haven't tried to fix sound as it is not priority), but not with 1024x768 on a 17" monitor...

I feel your pain

Have you tried the boot option "Graphics Mode"="1280x1024x32" ? You can add it in the com.apple.boot.plist if it works. Do you have a widescreen monitor or does it support higher resolutions? Then you need other values.

I have not but I guess it is worth a shot.

The problem, I heard, is without drivers it will only allow vesa standard resolutions... I think the max for 1440 x 900 is 1280x1024(not sure). Just like 1024x768 is max for 18xx (can't remember) x something...

I would be very happy and patiently waiting for QE/CI support if I could at least have a decent resolution like 1440 x 900. Nonetheless, I will give that 1280x1024 a try, and perhaps try video?

How do you think a 1280x1024 resolution would look on a 17"?

The most 17" or even 19" TFT monitors have only 1280x1024 as native resolution. I'm using two 20,1" Samsung Syncmaster 204b and an 21,3" Eizo Flexscan L997 which have a native resolution of 1600x1200. On ebay is a german company who sells the 204b's for 169 Euro. I prefer 4:3 instead of widescreen format.
