Unhappy [Please help] Leo4All v3 problems

Hi there,
i have some problems with Leo4All V3.

I installed this:
Modbin kernel 9.2.2
Old nForce chipset driver
No GFX drivers
forcedeth -v

System specs:
AMD Opteron [email protected]
Asus A8N32-SLI
Sapphire 2900XT 512mbram
2GB RAM DDR400
ATA 80GB HDD (i have sata but i need test first before "hard running" ) + SATA DVD

1) The biggest problem is total freeze on some unexpected situations. For example, when i updating the databaze on AMD Software Updater, it hangs (i can't move mouse, nothing - like picture). Not too many problems like other distros, for example, iDeneb was freezed after +-2mins. On Leo4All V4.1 I have problems with this too + when i downloading something (Safari, radio in iTunes).

2) Problems with 2900XT driver - When I tryed 2900XT drivers on Kalyway, after boot i have black screen with some granite (colored red, green, blue...). When I move mouse it is change a little bit. What's interesting, when I push the restart button, for +- 1 sec it get for normal!! Same on Leo4All, i tryed that installer for total lams, and didn't help, its same.

3) USB Massive Storage didn't work. I have exteral HDD and i tryed some tutorials (I installed IOUSBMassiveStorage.kext or something like that), than i run the kext in terminal - didnt work

I really want to use OSX, please help me, thanks!

PS: Sorry for bad english guys

First, welcome to the Forum, enjoy your stay.

Now there is another Opteron user It seemed that I was the only one, using 2 Opteron 185 and one Opteron 180, both on Asus A8N-SLI Premium, they are very similar to the A8N32-SLI (I still have two of them, want to sell 'em).

Here are possibly drivers for your gfx card. Check the device ID of your card, you can find it in the System Profiler.

Normally you can't directly update an AMD OSx86 system. There are still too many problems by overwrtitten files. Using Andy's 9.6.0 kernel I managed a Leo4All 10.5.3->10.5.6 update, but it still had to be fixed a lot.

Do you have an 2,5" USB powered or an 3,5" external storage device with external power supply connected? If it's 2,5" it may be possible that the USB ports have not enough power, I have the same problem. But I can provide you some files from my Leo4All system.

2 Opteron systems: OSx86 10.5.8, Andy's 9.8.0 kernel, Asus A8N-SLI Premium, Opteron 185 o'clocked @ 2 x 2,95 GHz (2nd system 2.6 GHz), ATI Radeon HD2600XT 256MB Dual-Monitor 2x HP L2035, 4 GB RAM, Griffin FireWave as main audio device, Marvell + nForce LAN, Asus U3S6 USB3/SATA6 card, 5,5 TB harddisk, Firewire 800 card, Apple Remote + eHome IR receiver, 2x Wacom serial graphics tablet, Canon Pixma iP4700, Logitech Internet Navigator wireless keyboard/mouse combination.

My Audio stuff: M-Audio Transit USB (default audio), M-Audio ProFire 610, M-Audio ProFire Lightbridge (34 channels) using Creamware A16 ADAT converter MIDI: M-Audio Midiman 4x MIDI interfaceBehringer Audio Mixers: Xenyx 1002, Xenyx 1002FX, Xenyx 1202FX, Eurorack UB1002FX, Eurorack MX1804FX, Eurorack MX262A • FX devices: Lexicon MPX100 DSP, Behringer DSP-1000 Virtualizer, Behringer MiniFEX 800 DSP, Behringer Multicom Pro MDX4400 compressor RETRO: MSSIAH midi/sequencer/synthesizer cardridge for the C64 (Dual-SID), Steinberg M.S.I. MIDI Interface for C64

You might want to try the Voodoo kernel on AMD: http://code.google.com/p/xnu-dev/

The voodoo kernel is nearly outdated and they say that it isn't working on systems beneath 10.5.5 or 10.5.6. Andys 9.6.0 kernel is more advanced, has better AMD support. Andy said it should be possible to use it on older versions but he couldn't test it. I can search for a link, but try best to get it working without a new kernel.

naquaada: hi, thanks

first for drivers on gfx card: this is the problem. i tryed this drivers and its the same like in kalyway - black and granite; my device id is 9400 i think, but with this installer i don't need to setup anything, or it isn't true?

for second - i want only update to 10.5.3, using method to download 10.5.3, put it in the downloads folder and run install in AMD Software Updater. Don't know is it this way allright, if is there another

it's 2,5", some Toshiba... it normal works in Windows. It will be nice from you to post some fix

one question: can i update the modbin kernel to 9.3.0 on 10.5.2 (if yes, how)/ is there any chance to repair my freeze problem?

thanks for reply

I uploaded a package for you, download it here.

It contains three extensions:

nForceLAN: very good LAN driver for your chipset, forcedeth will crash while large transfers.
AppleNForceATA: slashack's version with 64bit support for 4 GB RAM

and my version of IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext. Copy them into /System/Library/Extensions of your boot drive, and use these commands:

Code:
sudo -s

chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions && chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions
diskutil repairpermissions /

rm /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
Alternatively you can repair permissions with Disk Utility instead of the diskutil command. Reboot with -f option after the permissions are repaired, and check the network settings.

I also added the kernel packages from Andy and Kalyway, if you're installing the 9.3.0 kernal go after the drive selection into 'Cusstomize' (or what it's called in English) and select the modbin kernel only.

I also downloaded the installer package for the 2900, try it again, and boot in Safe Mode (-x option) after installing.

hey,
heres the experiences from one-day using:

1) ist not freezing now (thanks god,... and naquaada)
2) lan driver looks better than forcedeth's
3) USB not working it detects mouse, webcamera but not things like flashdrive or external HDD. its weard, anyone have ideas?
4) graphics drivers not working. i tryed install it in safe mode, than boot in safe mode too and leopard give me a information, that says - ATY_Franklin.kext cannot be used, or something like that. I didn't see anything on the normal (=not safe mode) boot, i must delete it. I dont know, is there some other drivers, or something? Or little modification of the driver like 2600XT or something like that...

Thanks for reply guys

It's normal 0x9400 (0x1002 - ATi). I controlled it in "About the Mac".
And hey, thanks for helping me

Edit: I almost forgot. I take photo of that. Here is it: (I'm using DVI)

Hmm, could you take a look in System/Library/Extensions/ATIRNRDV.kext? Open it with right-click/Show Package Contents and take a look in Contents/Plugins. What do you have in there? I have ATY_Megalodon, ATY_Prionace and ATY_PrinaceB.

You can download a package with modified drivers here. These are the drivers from my 2600XT, but Natit.kext is modified, it uses the Megalodon framebuffer for the 2900XT instead of the Franklin framebuffer. Maybe this works. Copy the files into the Extensions folder, repair permissions and reboot with -f option or in safe mode -x.
