The things above worked fine for me. If it's relevant(?): I didn't update airport (or anything), I made sure the wifi card was enabled in the bios and I booted with -f (you should try booting in safe mode too, -x).
Beyond that, I can't help. Good luck.
As a side note: I got tired of OSX, I'm currently runing Arch Linux ( www.archlinux.org) + OpenBox.
