Well OS X supports virtual adressing for the effective use of more memory then 3.* GB, but this does not work on AMD, Netburst (Intel P4, etc) by default - just on Intel-Core CPUs etc (those who are able to run Vanilla Kernel).

The Voodoo based Kernels out there support to force activate this feature using the "-force64" bootflag, but this is still often unstable...

You might update to latest 9.8.0 Voodoo Kernel by Andyvand:
