try to be sure what sound card you really have. ac97 is a standard, not a manufacturer. my audio card (adi1988) is identified in bios as azalia audio. the azalia audio driver will only give stereo output. so it's very important to see exactly what audio chipset you have. it should be in your motherboard manual, or on your motherboard manufacturer website.
i see that there are many audio drivers included in the ipc release, so select the exact one you have.
if you already hava a working system, you can use pacifist to install an audio driver from the ipc dvd. it would be best to remove any other audio kexts from /System/Library/Extensions, and also extensions.mkext if you install a new driver. after that reboot with -f flag to force loading all the kexts.
hope this works for you.

just run ppf-o-matic, use the select buttons to select the iso and the ppf file, and then click apply. be sure to use ppf1 first and then ppf2. it does not matter where the iso and the ppf are located.

it would also help a lot if you would put your hardware specs in your signature.

Now im not one to talk as I have not updated to 5.6 yet. (I have installed 10.5.6 on a laptop temporarily) Is it possible that a few of your kexts got overwritten with those from the update? Id try rolling back a few of them if you backed them up.

boot.efi is the file used by real macs to boot to that volume. It sounds like the bootloader you selected didn't install correctly. Either this or you selected the wrong one. How did you customize?

You may be on to something. I'm new at this so I don't recall which bootloader I selected.

Given my specs which bootloader would you recommend?

I also wanted to add that on CD boot at the f8 screen I entered "-f -x -v". Now I did this on each install attempt with the same end result - the BomFileError message mentioned earlier.

I also tried to select as little as I could on the customize screen during install. I think the last attempt I simply selected the Voodoo kernel 9.5.0 since I have an AMD cpu.

Other than that there isn't much more I can add.

I did patch the 10.5.6 ISO with ppf1 and ppf2.

Any help is appreciated.
