OSx86 Library Build

Hey guys,

I used to be a member of InsanelyMac, but will most likely spend time here now for all my OSx86 Forum needs. Me and Sabr ( InsanelyMac Admin ) last year made http://www.osx86library.com/hardware/ to make it easier to manage hardware information. Recently InsanelyMac made a DB and completely ripped the information off our site, and we immediatly made sure that they pulled our sites content off their database. Which they have, but they still decided to continue with their database and it sucks.

Anyway, we are still going strong, have have just released something really cool called Build. Basically it lets the user build a fully compatable system using information from our database, with a sleek Web 2.0 feel. It is still in Beta and we will be tweaking it continually to give the user a super-easy experience using it.

Of course there are a few drawbacks atm, for Build to work it needs to have some vital information for each piece of Hardware. We and whoever wants to contribute are starting to go through the database and clean up the entries plus complete missing information. Hopefully our efforts make your experience with OSx86 an easy one.

Welcome, I too am likely switching from insanely mac (it just too full of newbs with stupid questions).

This looks like a great resource. Can you create an application that will poll a user system and upload the details to your system? That would be amazing!

Or just have the app create a standardized print out of the system details that a user submits?

why should we put the info in a library if you can use the wiki?

No not that. He means http://osx86library.com

Just look at this site and you should know why in a split second. It's easier than the wiki both in management and usability terms.

I don't want to run this project down.

But: The information should be kept in one place, editable by anybody (spell checking, fixing nonsense/not only by a moderator). under a cc licence. The format should be open, to make it possible to use it, even if the original person who hosted it, has to shut it down (lack on money,...). Well, like wikipedia.

The osx86 wiki currently lacks under different formating of many articles.

There also shouldn't be too many to look at if you need information. OSx86 Library, Insanelymac Library/wiki, Infinitemac Board/wiki, xy board,...

I hope the trend won't lead to a wrong way...

Well the problem with the Wiki is one important thing... Expandability.

With OSx86 Library, we can now use this information in creative ways. We can create API's off it, we can use it in applications etc etc.

We want to keep it as open as possible, but keep a fairly strict standard for quality reasons. That is why we went for a system where anyone can edit the entries, but they have to be checked by a mod. And it seems to be working reasonably well for us.

Agreed. Just wonder as it will be a very valuable resource once fully populated. What's the commitment to keeping it a free resource usable to the public etc?

We are all volunteers, so OSx86 Library will always be free.
