SL on MBP

(Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this) But I got a new 13" mbp and upgraded it to 10.6. Everything works well except the headphone port. It cant detect if a headphone is plugged in and will just output audio through internal speakers.
Thing is, If i try using a headphone with 3 bands (mike, left, right) It will work. Any ideas?

I can check my new MacBookPro (5,2) 17" to see if I get the same problem, but you might want to try booting the 64-boot kernel and see if the problem goes away first.

Reboot with the "6" and "4" keys held down and see if the problem is still there.

My headphones are immediately detected and selected for output when I plug them in on 32-bit Snow Leopard. There is no output from the speakers either.

Switching between headphones and built-in speakers seems to work in both 32-bit and 64-bit Snow Leopard on my MacBookPro (5,2) 17".

Headphones are automatically detected when plugged-in and the speakers are turned (and vice versa).

I am using really cheap, crappy headphones too, in fact I might just trash them right now. They have no third channel for a microphone.

It sounds like you upgraded from Leopard, you might want to try a clean Snow Leopard install instead (which is usually a good idea anyways).

Alternatively, you may want to determine which kext is responsible for audio on system (AppleHDA.kext?) and try replacing it. If you like I can post a copies of kexts from my 10.6 installation.

Good luck!

Ok, I grabbed a bunch of Snow Leopard kexts (build #A432) that could possibly have something to do with your headphones/speakers issue and posted them here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/27033667...Kexts.zip.html

I would start with replacing AppleHDA.kext, then the other audio kexts, then the lower level kexts.

I assume you know how to replace kexts, but in case you don't, use something like Kext Helper here:
http://cheetha.net/

I hope you partitioned your hard drive and have Leopard (10.5) installed as a back up OS X installation you can boot from.

Good Luck!

One more thing...

realityiswhere is working on a Kext glossary at the ProjectOSX forum that you might find useful, I know I did:
