First off, I personally wouldn't touch one of the distros, but it really depends on how easy you want it to be... I much prefer retail installs, they are far cleaner and easier to update.....

I had the same problem on my atom board desktop, what bootloader are you using? If your using chameleon or pc_efi you can load a DSDT.aml file on boot and it solves all GMA950 problems on desktops.....
