Have you tried the voodoo kernel (http://code.google.com/p/xnu-dev/)? This will run like vanilla on supported systems like yours, but it also has many optimisations/tweaks for pc hardware.

The 4gb ram problems were caused by the hard disk drivers only supporting 32bit addresses. If you've got a board that uses kexts based on AppleVIAATA like nForce, you'll need to replace your drivers...

ATA drives in most cases are easier to get up and running on OS X than SATA.

It could be caused by a bad burn so it might be worth reburning the image at a slower speed and see if that helps?
