Red face Updating to 10.5.5 from 10.5.2

Ok so I've got a fully working 10.5.2 from Zephyroth's Rev2. I've got the AMD Software Updater but problem is when I download and install the updates my systems then becomes unusable. I boot into safe mode and reinstall my networking, audio and video kexts but that only seems to get me from the white apple screen crash to a black screen with the restart message.

here are my specs:

Mobo: Asus AN8-E (nforce 4 chipset with AC97 audio)
Processor: Athlon 64 3200+
RAM: 2.5GB
GFX: Asus Radeon x1600 EAX 256mb
HDD: WD800JB (80gb western digital)

Ok now should I be selecting the modify only option that appears in the updater or do I just simply download the updates and reinstall all my kexts?

first off, are you using the new voodoo kernel?

if not, then you'll need to MAKE separate Single-Update installers using ASU...
using combo updates does not work if you are working on an AMD-patched system.

I'm hoping this is as simple as possible because normally it confuses the hell out of people:

ASU was found to alter any ".pkg" file placed in a user's Downloads folder... Thanks go to naquaada for this awesome find. This means that if you place the single updates downloaded directly from the Apple website (Downloads -> All Downloads -> Apple -> Mac OS X Updates) and extract the .pkg file from the image you download and place it in your Downloads folder it will be patched so you can install it to an AMD system.

You NEED to have at least one update that is left in your system that you can select "modify only" for... then run ASU and then manually install the .pkg files (except for any combo updates you may have had to select to create the single-updates)...

so first, place the files in the Downloads folder, then run ASU...

any questions?

EDIT: in your case, I would do a clean install and then try this. You will also have a lot of things you can select "Modify Only" for now, and I recommend SAVING any that you create.

if you need, I still have MY update packages from back in the day when I needed them. PM me if you don't want to do the work yourself... however, I still recommend a clean install.

Would you recommend updating to the voodoo kernel first?

just so i can confirm I'm about to do the right steps:

I simply download the updates right from the apple website
Then I extract the .pkg files out of the .dmg files I get from the website
I then place the .pkg file in the download folder
Then I run AMD Software Updater normally without selecting any specific options?
reboot and hope for the best?

<sigh>... not simple enough....

if you would like to update to the voodoo kernel first, go ahead.

steps:
1) update to voodoo kernel (optional at this point)
2) download SINGLE updates (ie. Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update, Mac OS X 10.5.4 Update)
3) place .pkg file installers found within the images from step 2 in your Downloads folder.
4) select ONE update from the list in ASU's update selection section (takes the shortest time to get to your files then) and select "MODIFY ONLY" in the bottom left corner.
5) run ASU (your system will not update automatically because of the "modify only" option.
6) install the NEWLY patched single updates from your Downloads folder manually.
7) if you haven't updated to the newest voodoo kernel, do it now
8) run ASU again and update to 10.5.5.

Good?

I am assuming the following is not good.... thats from the log file from the ASU after i select modify only on a update. Like i'm doing everything correctly and I just tried it on a fresh install

14:46:28 MacOSXUpd10.5.3.pkg extracted.
14:46:29 Detecting cpuids for MacOSXUpd10.5.3.pkg ...
14:46:31 Done
14:46:32 No cpuids found !
14:46:32 No need to rebuild !
14:46:34 Extracting MacOSXUpd10.5.4.pkg ...
14:46:36 MacOSXUpd10.5.4.pkg extracted.
14:46:36 Detecting cpuids for MacOSXUpd10.5.4.pkg ...
14:46:39 Done
14:46:39 No cpuids found !
14:46:39 No need to rebuild !

but if i'm not mistaken if I simply run the amd patcher on the .pkg files they should fine correct?

the new AMD Patcher should work for you as well. This is the easier route to go down now... I'm sorry I forgot it now supports this.. good thought.
