Always use the -v option when booting to see whats going on instead of just grey apple screen.
You should need no special kernel for a Core 2 Duo, just make sure you are using vanilla kernel....

I'm not sure what you mean with window reflect/flip its content, maybe if you post a screenshot, but scrolling and dragging windows cause graphical bugs on my 8600GTS when QE/CI is not accelerated...
